22mag vs 17 hmr

17 hmr is no doubt, fairly impressive. If nothing else, it seems to have generated a great deal of hype.


The question is, will ammo costs for 17 hmr ever fall down to 22 mag level? I seem to have a niche in my collection for such a creature, but ammo costs need to be reasonable..

One thing to keep in mind is much of the 17 HMR ammo on the market is 'premium' ammo where there is a lot of plain jane 22 Mag ammo.

The 22 Mag ammo I shoot the most of is the Winchester Supreme 34 Gr. Very accurate in my rifle and very effective on game. They cost me $7/box - $7.50/box. With 17 HMR, it's about $9 or $10 per box but the ammo I know that guys use are the CCI TNT or the Hornady VMax, both of which are certainly 'premium'.

It would be nice if one of the companies would come out with some 17-20 gr FMJ ammo similar to CCIs Maxi Mag solids.

The price of .17 will come down to .22mag levels as production catches up.............there are LOTS of the rifles out there. Recently Remmington introduced a semi and pretty much everyone else has a pump or lever action now for sale so bullet use will increase even more! supply-demand

All the ammo dealers are saying that both the HMR and the new CCi will be shipping out to buyers on the 22nd of next month.

I dunno, I'm skeptical. Since 17HMR is really made for hunting, I think prices might stay where they are for awhile. Hunters don't normally buy in bulk (many of us here on THR being the exception), and well, that makes demand low.

General demand low, but a demand that will never leave, higher prices.

Now, if someone could start using the 17HMR in competition and start a little trend, that could turn the tide.

.22LR is great for plinking because of the price. 17's are expensive; and until the prices come down to below 22Mag, and availability is very very high; I will stick to 22LR thank you. $9 for a brick of 500 CCI blazers; can't beat the 22LR's!

you're right, you can't beat cheap .22...........unless you are going for 'head shots' (on heads the size of walnuts) @ 200 yards

The thing about the .17HMR is that it is very accurate.

The ammo/barrel/twist combo is just about as good as it gets.

A very inexpensive .17 (like my $200 Savage) will out shoot about any (without exception) .22

That is not hype, its real.

I think the ammo/cost/availability thing is a problem. Mine is only used for hunting. Plinking is too expensive. If I want to plink, the .22 comes out.

Hopefully the availability of the ammo will improve. But if sub par ammo affects accuracy, then the majic of the .17HMR goes away immediately.

So it will be interesting to see what comes about with the little .17.

I'm not convinced either. 17 grains makes me scratch my mustache... I don't like to scratch my mustache.

I've been eyeing something in .17HMR, but my Remington 597 .22WMR is plenty for now. Squirrels don't know the difference anyway.
