Can't count the deer and turkey I've taken with 243 using 80gn sp. As any you'll have to find which brand it likes. Privie is good stuff in every caliber I have.

How does this help the OP with his question on a round suggestion for .243?

OP, my daughter uses a Savage Axis .243 and Winchesters 100 gr PowerPoint. So far she’s taken 3 deer between 20 and 100 yards and all 3 dropped in their tracks.

The 100 Grain Win. Power Point is a great deer round for the .243.

I have discovered that my .243 rifle shoots most accurately with ammo featuring a bullet that weighs 95 grains. The high shoulder shot placement drops a deer in its tracks. You Tube videos illustrate this shot placement quite well.

Like some others have said here, the better question is whether or not you can find any ammo at all. I too have taken deer with the 243. You need to stick with bullets of 95 to 100 grains. If possible, use a bonded or a partition bullet. You can get the job done with any of the standard factory soft point bullets but you need to avoid the heavy bones, especially at the close ranges you will likely encounter in the Southeast part of the country.. these bullets at close ranges will blow up on contact when they hit a shoulder bone. This may result in reduced penetration and a deer that will run...making recovery difficult in heavy cover.. shot placement will be the most critical factor with any caliber rifle...perhaps a bit more so with the 243 depending on the bullet used. There are plenty of people that will tout 243 bullets in the 80 to 85 grain class as outstanding choices for deer. While deer have been taken with 80 and 85 grain bullets, shot placement with these bullets becomes all the more critical. Good luck!

The Sierra 85gr HPBT is really a legend among 243 shooters for use on deer. It is the most devastating bullet I have ever used on deer...bar none.

Fusion is GREAT ammo. As is Hornady Whitetail.

    The biggest concern is:
    1. What shoots best in THAT particular rifle?
    2. What can find?

All of it will do the job, as long as you stay away from varmint bullets.
