25-06 v 270

My Ruger .25-06 has trouble shooting groups larger than 3/4" @100. My Ruger .270 has trouble shooting groups less than 1.5" at same distance. Go figure.
I don't doubt it...their barrels are supposed to be much improved. Just saying that, on average, a Ruger M-77 isn't likely to best a Savage M-12. I like Ruger, they build a pretty good rifle, on a solid action.

:)

Here I thought I was leaning toward the 270...after all your comments, now I'm looking at the 25. Q for 68wj...do you handload for either, both? That is a substantial difference in accuracy for two cartridges so outwardly similar.

I do. The .270 is a lightweight "all weather" model and I only recently found a load combo that would give me 1". The .25-06 is sitting in a bedded Fajen stock and shoots factory and handloads very well. Both are M77 MK2s (not sure the years).

I wouldn't read too much into it though. Either caliber is capable of great accuracy but dependent on the rifle and nut behind the stock.

Accuracy difference between the two is hard to quantify.... the particular rifle, the particular load and of course the shooter....

It's been my experience that generally speaking the 25-06 tends to be a bit more accurate with everything else being equal.

However, I've seen a few 270s that were like lasers. But not many.... more often the 25 is gonna be the winner in a accuracy contest.

As to brands.... I've only had one Savage that didn't shoot like a house afire... and I've owned dozens of them. They're one ugly rifle but they usually perform better than rifles that cost 3 and 4 times as much.

I've seen Remingtons that shot great and a bunch that shot like crap. I've had maybe 2 dozen Rugers, all shot acceptable groups for killing deer except the Mini 14 I had...... what a pig that was. Most of the Rugers were mediocre though....average at best.

The best shooting Ruger I ever had was a early 80s M77 in 300WM..... that thing would put 2 shots into .6 or .7 like religion..... never should have sold that one.

Had a bunch of Winchesters too, some good most average and a few pigs. Same with CZ, SAKO (way over rated in my opinion) and Weatherby...

Had a couple of Tikka's.... they were ok as well. But nothing to brag about.

Several Browning A-Bolts.... I was happy with most of them but the only really good one was a stainless 308 with the BOSS.... that thing shot great but the noise ran all my friends off....... had to sell it

25-06 here. 115 grain nosler partitions is my bullet choice. Ive killed deer ,antelope some past 400yards DRT. I have also taken elk and caribou with out any problems also DRT. Once I draw a sheep tag I will use my 25-06 for that hunt

My 25-06 comes in the form of Ruger Hawkeye. 117gr Sierra Gamekings have some very bad side effects.....if your a whitetail;)

It shoots amazingly flat out to 300 yards. Thats punching holes in paper. As far as deer go there are very few long shot opportunities down here in my neck of the woods:)

All that being said I can't imagine not being happy with a good 270 as well.

Old Scratch, even though I've owned the .25-06 for 30 years and think it's one of the top hunting cartridges around I'd first give some thought to the use.

If I were going for game larger then Elk I'd probably go for the .270. But in 30 years I haven't hunted anything in the US that I can't take with the .25.

And I still say everyone should own a .25-06. It has less recoil then a .270 and does almost anything a .270 can do.
