What can you tell us about it, have you shot it yet?

The 280 Rem is a great long range cartridge, and has the 270 Winchester as a close relative. Good for deer, elk, hogs, pretty much anything but big bears.
I don't own any Ruger rifles, but I'm sure others can vouch for them.

I just bought a new Hawkeye all-weather 280. It is a sub-MOA gun with 140gr Fusions. So far those are the only ones I've tried. The cartridges are higher than a 30-06 or 270 unless you reload, which I do not....yet. The Hawkeye claims to have a better trigger, but I've never compared. Good luck, hope it shoots and you like it enough to make it your #1.

I have the all weather Ruger MkII in 280 as well. It shoots an 1" at a 100 yards with 140 gr. handloads. Its fairly new to me so I have not used it on game yet. I have had other 280s and they are good for anything you want to shoot in the lower 48 and will do fine up North with good 160 or 175 gr. bullets. Since they are a necked down 06 case the difference between it and the .270 or .30-06 is pretty academic.

.280 is awesome

I have a Remington 7400 in .280 Rem. It is as accurate as most quality bolt rifles
I handload only, and it will print under an inch (100 yds) with 5 shots of 150gr corelokt bullets with IMR3031 powder,
all others will print 1" to 2". You can load bullets from 120grns to 175 grns from coyote to elk.
I would not attempt Grizzly or Moose, but in the right hands I believe it is capable.
I took two Pronghorns in Wyoming last October with 130 grn handloads.

As for Ruger guns they are durable and accurate for generations.

I don't have your combination, but I do have the following:

A mark II in 7 mag. Excellent rifle except for a heavy trigger. A trigger job fixed that problem.

My 2 280's are both tack drivers. A Winchester M70 and a Remington 700 classic. Love the cartridge. Takes everything from small critters to elk without the heavier recoil from larger things like 7 mag, 300 Win mag, etc.

Thats a great hand me down for sure, Ruger 280 m77 markII will last for ever.
I was out at the range today with my Winchester clasic, featherweight,in 280 .
You'll fall in love with the 280 for sure..
Good luck with your new to you rifle.

Ive always liked the .280 (tho i prefer the AI). It comes pretty close to the heels of the 7mm remington when both are shooting 140s and launched from a 24" tube.
As for the rifle, im not greatly familiar with them. The only ruger mk2s ive handled have been in gun shops. A friend of mine DID use one in 06 quite a bit, never grouped it but I dont think I ever saw him miss a deer.

LOVE the round. LOVE the rifle.
The .280 is my absolute favorite deer caliber. The only one I own is a POS NEF Handi Rifle. My M77 is a .243 and is one of the older tang safety models, but I love it. I wish I had a M77 in .280. I saw one the other day and just didn't have the funds at the time. You'll be very pleased with that setup.
