Greetings all.

I am new here, although i found i created a profile here 3 years ago... don't remember that... whatever.

I recently purchased a Winchester model 70 featherweight wood stock, chambered in the unique .280 remington. the rifle intrigued me, as i was a huge fan of the 7RM, and already had the bullets to reload... i'm not finding a lot of load data on the .280 rem.... i went to imrpowder.com and nosler.com looking for loads... but i havn't seen much. looking to load 139/140 grain bullets, and 150 grain winchester power points... always been a huge fan of those... there cheap, effective..... and uh... have been around since nearly the dawn of mankind... ok not really but you get my drift. has anyone worked a good .280 load, from a 22 inch barrel, with 140/150 grain bullets??? Thanks.

Welcome back to THR, Dups.

I don't have to tell you how good the 280 is for an all around game taker. A slow powder with 150gr bullet is strong medicine for about any cloven hoofed game animal.

Alliant makes some good powders for it. If you can't find your exact bullet and weight, go to the next heavier bullet listed and that data will be safe with the lighter bullets. Alliant lists maximum loads for use, but they state that you should reduce the starting loads 10%.

Between the Alliant and Hodgdon sites, you should be able to work up a load or two that works in your rifle.

All of my recent reloading manuals have info for the 280 Remington.

Have you looked at any of the manuals?

It is a very good round... excellent bullet selection!

Thanks all. i don't have any real "reloading manuals". what i have is a magazine on reloading, a few small instructional books, and such. basically enough to get started. i've always pulled loads offline, and worked with that. I got the rifle for such a good deal i couldn't pass it up... model 70 featherweight, in i'd say... 95%. the stock had some scratches, light however... there is one small mar in the blueing, but nothing a touch up pen won't fix. the scope however... was the real kicker.... Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x44 with AO. Its beautiful, and i absolutly love it. Thanks for all the help!!! i was leaning towards RL-19, and winchester power point 150's... i prefer a heavier slug at times... and i think it would buck brush a little better here in the "GA" swamps. Thanks!!!

oh, i got it for...

Trade in: Savage model 111 7mm remington magnum, with a cheapo NCStar scope...
Cash: 325.83 after tax and background check fee.... i'd say i won.
 
That is a great caliber. Had one custom built in the mid 80s by the guy that used to build my benchrest rifles. One of those rifles I wish I had never let go of.

What i'm looking for is a load to punch a 150 grain winnie power point 2800-3000 fps. closer to the higher end of that range, because my featherweight only has a 22" barrel.
 
I have a pair of them and they are my go to rifles. R19 or H4831 should get you well on the way.
 
well, i'm not OVERLY impressed with the 139 grain hornady sst custom factory loads... they shoot about a 2" group at 100 yds from a rough rest... i'm also not the best shot... but its more than adequate for deer hunting... i'm going to work on it some more... but i'd like to shoot a little heavier bullets... i have a bunch of the 150's... and i've found a local source for some 165 grain core-lokt factory loads... might just pick them up for brass...

You will be really pushing it to get a 150 to 3K fps. A 140, no problemo! The core-loct will be a very effective bullet. A 150 CL @ 2900 will be a bang---FLOP round. I had plenty of those with my .280 using 140 ballistic tips.
 
ive got one just like it and mine does its best with a 145 speer hot core flat based bullet pushed by 4831sc. Easily under an inch for 5 shots at a 100 yards. Shot a number of whitetail with it using that bullet and ate every one of them.
 
i definatly love the rifle, although it has some issues.... the blueing is rubbed off in a few spots, and the barrel is drilled or bored offcenter its about 1mm to one side at the muzzel.... but i figured, for the price i got it for i couldn't risk passin it up still, its more than plenty accurate for my hunting practices.
 
I have a custom 7mm-06, (280 Remington), it is built on a Mauser action with a Douglas barrel that was pretty cheap. the bore is off center by a small amount with the thick part on the bottom. It will shoot 160 grain Speers into one jagged hole at 100 yards and 1 1/4" at 300 yards.
Don't let the offset bore freak you out. If you bore sight mine, it will shoot 6 inches high at 100 yards, but is inline vertical.
This is my favorite deer rifles.

I don't know if it's a .280 thing or my rifle, but mine is very picky. I can't get it to group worth anything unless it's a 140 grain ballistic silvertip. I've bought the dies so I'm about to try and work up a load for mine. My rifle is just a NEF Handi Rifle. I love the caliber and hope to get a nice bolt in it eventually. I hear they're offering the T/C Venture in it now. That'll be worth a look.

i'm looking at a load using H4350 or RL19.. but i'm curious... most loads are listed for a 24 inch barrel... aren't these a little slow for a 22" barrel?
 
You may or may not lose velocity between 22" & 24" barrels. If it were the same barrel cut to 22" then maybe you'd lose about 20-30 FPS/inch. I have a 22" barreled 25/06 that shoots faster than the 24" barreled one it replaced.

There are fast barrels and there are slow barrels... the only way to know for sure is to shoot yours over a chronograph.

Yes. Remington tried re-naming it, why seems to be an often debated question. A lot of dummies bought that ammo for a 7mm mag, it caused little damage, but usually jammed the rifle. I even got 19 rounds of .280 from the boss at work. A friend had bought them for his 7mm rem bolt gun. He actually killed a deer with it, lucky because it took a gunsmith to get the round out! IIRC it was around 5 years, then they changed it back to .280.
 
SCARY thought.... the 7mm mag case and the .280 case are totally different... the .280 case could fit in the chamber of the 7 mag and flop all over.... even if somehow the firing pin did hit the primer, i imagine that would obliterate the case, destroy the gun, and likely seriously injure the shooter...

Actually the two cases are almost exactly the same length, the brass case that is. Also, since they're both 7mm, the bullets will enter the neck area easily. The difference is, of course, the diameter of the case body, and the head.

A .280 will be stripped from most magazines at a wrong angle, so feeding from the mag SHOULD tip off the ignoramus that bought the wrong ammo that something is amiss. But, a lot of people load the mag, then drop one in the chamber. The bolt will center the smaller 280 well enough to hit the primer with the FP.

The case WILL rupture, blowing gas, and possibly shrapnel, back past the bolt. Some chambers are vented to direct the junk out the side.
 
so, what are you .280 guys out there loading? this thread has gone in the entirely wrong direction but hey, thats what forums are for.
