A friend of mine has some black tip AP 30-06 ammo. Is this legal in the once great state of California? -Dave
As long as the AP is not 'handgun ammunition', its possession is not prohibited AFAIK. You can search through here: http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/dwcl/index.html IANAL
A little solvent on a rag will remove the black paint on the tip. Then the ammo becomes ordinary ball.
I belive it is CA legal, yes. I have a few boxes You may cross into a CA law grey area if you attempt to shoot it in a Contender or one of the other .30-06 'pistols'... But all AP rifle ammo that is legal federally, should be legal in CA.
It'd better be -- I just pulled a bunch of AP bullets for a friend of mine and loaded them into new cases wih new primers and powder. They're sitting here on my shelf.
Good Question Yes it's legal according to what is posted by the DOJ: http://www.ag.ca.gov/firearms/dwcl/12316.htm
The key words are "ammunition principally use in pistols". Interesting because there are a few .223 pistol around (AR15type) and did see some some AP SS109 type ammo on sale a few week ago. However I can't find any in 7.62x51 or 7.62x39(steel core Norinco) any more. I was told they are banded from importation but someone I know has some here in calfornia. Oh yes there some in AP .50 Browning harded core ammo here. I found some cores at the range. I think that the justification for Kal banning them.
my buddy was showing me a big slug with a black tip which he said meant armor piercing, and by default, illegal in Cali
The law specifically exempts M855 (.223 green tip) and M2 (.30-06 black tip) from the definition of armor piercing ammunition. Kharn
