.30-06 shooters, what type of comercial ammo shoots best through your rifles?

Core-Lokt is hard to beat in general. It's old technology, but kills stuff dead just fine. Cheap, too. So do Hornady SST's. And pretty much anything from Federal. Never had a reason to use Winchester.

I don't bother comparing groups with my hunting rifles... I pick the bullet I want, zero it, and move along with life.

If I had to hunt with factory ammo, it would be Federal Premium with the 180 grain Nosler Partition, which is as close as I can get in a factory round to my "standard" big game hunting handload.

Most of the time I'm not after anything that might kill me back. Like others I shoot very little factory ammo with one exception, my little Ruger in .308, even so I generally shot the cheapest I could get.

When I got the rifle I figured I would simply shoot up a few boxes of the cheap Rem CL ammo just to get the cases to load myself. But the little Compact shoots the stuff into an inch at 100yds and has rocked it out past 400 on several occasions to deliver the goods to the hogs.

So when I was resurrecting my pop's old 03A3, I figured why not give some of the Remington ammo a try in it to see how it shot. Well same thing, it groups around 1" most of the time and never has broke 1.5 on the high side. Hard to argue with that plus the track record of the CL's. Best part is it will do it with both the 150 and the 165gr loads.

Good luck with yours, if I were to pick an all around bullet weight, I would say to go with the 165's if you can find them, if not the 150's work plenty well. One thing I have found though, if you pick up a couple of boxes and they shoot good to very good you might well go pick up another 10 of them. I have had a couple of different lots shoot to different points of impact over the years. Usually with the .308 when I purchased my ammo I would pick up 10 or so boxes at a time, but it was usually right after deer season when I did and it was usually on sale for about $10-12 per box. As you can see it's been a while since I picked any up.

Oh the irony.

What's really strange is that they sell the worst .22 ammo available IMO. And yes I know some of you love it. Beats me why but you do.
