I understand that Remington supposedly releases a batch of .30-40 Krag yearly in the Fall, but despite setting up multiple alerts and notifications, I haven't found any online this year. Some of my local gun stores have some, but not much. Where do you find your .30-40 Krag rounds? (Reloading is not on my priority list.)

Have you tried the big box stores like Cabela's? It's not a hot seller, so if you are lucky, the boxes just sit.

Gander Mountain in Peoria has sold me about twenty boxes of Remington 180 Gr loads in the past two years. They have it in stock now and I'm betting other GM stores might have it also. I'm not into reloading either and I have a nice stash built up, now. Scheels in Iowa City also has a lot of it, so I'm guessing that chain store also regularly stocks it. Assuming your state laws permit it, how many boxes do ya need?

Good luck....sad to say if you want to shoot in general, or hunt with something like that reloading is something you should look into. The "bullet" itself is not that big a deal....

I have two Krag's one carbine...one from the FIL, that he and his brother went in on together because they could not afford the $25 for the 03 springfield....they used it to poach deer....yup you read that correct....people gotta eat....and this is what they did.

Look into reloading...you might find it enjoyable.

Last time I bought factory loads it was around $2 per bang. I am too cheap.

Funny you should say that, the old Krag that I have was from my Grandpa. He had bought it as a very young man in the 1930's, just for poaching deer. Meat was pretty rare, even for farmers, in that time period. Any extra that could be hunted was bonus. It could mean one more hog could be sold instead of eaten by the family.

My Krag is in very good condition, he must not of shot it too much, still got good bluing and nice wood, full size 1898 Springfield Krag-Jorgenson.

Sorry to derail from the OP, don't see much 30-40 ammo on any local stores, can't say I recall seeing any for several years. It might be your best bet is finding someone who reloads and having them make you some.

I use to hit up the smaller gun shops looking for .30-40 Krag and occasionally would turn up a box or two but I haven't seen any in years.

Cabela's often have it on the shelf. None shows up on-line. It's really a reloading only proposition these days :(

I'll buy from local stores for now, and may consider reloading more seriously if I become more proficient in the rifle, and when I have more time and space for another project. I did some searching online. It seems one benefit to reloading .30-40 Krag is that there are many more possible cartridge options than what Remington provides with the Corelokt, and that is intriguing. Do I understand it correctly that the bullet is a 30 Caliber (.308), and not a special .30-40 bullet - that it's the case that makes it .30-40?

Thanks for all of the responses.

" .30 Army loading was standardized in 1894 using a 220-grain metal-jacketed round-nose bullet with 40 grains of nitrocellulose powder. This loading developed a maximum velocity of 2,000 ft/s (610 m/s) in the 30-inch (760 mm) barrel of the Krag rifle. "

The 40 comes from the old tradition of listing the powder load behind the bullet. 308 bullet :)

Most fun load with the Krag is the Lyman 311284 210 gr over 22 grs 4227 or equivalent
(Ed Harris loads:http://www.castboolits.gunloads.com...Cast-Bullet-Loads-for-Military-Rifles-Article )

The Krag chamber has a long throat because of the original 220 gr bullet and barrel grooves range from .308 to .312, so, in my experience, .311 - .312" lead of 200 - 220 grs shoot better than Remington's .308 180 grs. Very easy cartridge to load for. My favorite bolt gun for the range.

I reload for my Krag 30-40 carbine. I prefer the .303 British brass. It is slightly shorter after full length sizing. It does head space better and last longer.

"...yearly in the Fall..." It's 'seasonally' for sure, but there's no mention anywhere of said season being the Fall. Or 'yearly'.
"...become more proficient in the rifle..." .30-40 Krag is one of the cartridges you jump on and buy as much as you can, when you see it. Or you learn to make the brass out of .303 Brit and reload. It appears occasionally on the assorted auction sites though.
Ventura munitions says they're out of stock as of right now.

I've got some factory Winchester Power Point, Remington Core-Lokt, and Peters ammo. But I just hand load for it with 180 grain bullets.

I learned the .303 brass trick from Dog Soldier. It works. Got tired of buying 30-40 brass of mixed types that had been already loaded who knows how many times. I did find a couple boxes of Remington loaded 30-40 at an old gun store. I promptly bought both boxes.
