$300 dollars, what to to get?

I have $300 dollars to spend on a rifle. I already have a .22, What kind of rifle do you suggest?

I want a semi auto rifle that i can use for hunting either 4 legged or possibly 2 legged creatures if SHTF.

Do you think an SKS is a good choice?

The SKS is a great choice for SHTF/truck gun/plinking/blasting/fun gun. If you want to hunt prairie dogs at 200 yards, it won't work. If you're hunting deer at 35 yards, it'll be fine. It was made to hunt people, but is that really something you're planning on doing? If so, uniformed men with much better rifles will soon be interfering with your plans.

As dakotasin said, what are your uses. More info will get you better answers.

The best thing to do is to put $300 in the bank, keep adding to it, study your situation and see what you will REALLY use a rifle for, and get something suitable when you have that question answered and enough money saved up.
No point in having money burning a hole in your pocket and asking the Internet how to squander it.

I was going to mention a lever gun myself. It depends on if you are stuck on semi-auto or not. Lever guns are nice, handy, and easy to use.

If self defense if the primary purpose, consider a good shotgun.

saiga, saiga, then saiga. if you go bolt and semi, go sks and mosin nagant. I f you want just a good bolt, go savage or stevens.

I have 3 of the saiga's in 308. What a blast. I can shoot 1.5 inches at 100 yards all day with 2 of them and the third one will shoot 1.25 inches at 100. One of the best deer rifles I have. I have paid less then $300 for each one of them.

You could get a Yugo SKS, and a case of ammo for around that price. Or you could get a WASR10. If you intentions are primarily SHTF, the WASR is a very good choice.

Shooter grade yugo SKS and K31 or Mosin Nagant 44 or 91/30. Plus a bit of ammo for both. Get more ammo as soon you can get it. All accomplished with an '03 license that costs 30$ and pays for itself on the 1st purchase.
The SKS satisfies the rambo feelings you may have, and the bolt action lets you have reasonable accuracy, range and penetration for most tasks.

Well, 17K rds of .22LR sounds real good to me too, but for the precise question...

...if you're not stuck on semi-auto, go with the Marlin 336 in .30-30 and get all the ammo and reloading stuff (press, .30-30 dies, 150gr/170gr SP flat nose bullets and IMR 4064) you can put with it. The rifle is handy and easy to use and you can mount a Williams FP/TK rear sight and have a PointBlankZero out to something like 350yds with plenty of energy for deer sized game or SHTF work.

Disclaimer... if you're planning on killing men for any reason other than in self defense in the gravest extreme, you're talking to the wrong guy. Sure, I own an M1 Garand which was designed to hunt people in combat situations, but I bought it figuring I'd never have to use it for that. In and of itself, it's a really fun rifle to shoot.

It is big enough for animals up to couple hundred pounds.
