Whatever it is --- get it!:D
Really, what does it say on the gun?

7x57
7mm Rem.Mag.
7mm-08

There just aren't that many 7mm's people in the U.S.A. buy to hunt with.

It should also say something other than Mossberg, somewhere on the gun.
HOWA...? 1500...? Made in Japan...? Something.

BTW, my preference is the 7mm Rem.Mag.
I just LIKE it.
It'll work for most anything I'll ever hunt, anyway.

I hope you can get some more information to us regarding that rifle, so we can REALLY help you! ;)

A 7mm what? 7mm-08? 7x57mm Mauser? 7mm Waters? 7mm Improved Ackely?

If you want to take deer-sized game any of these cartridges are fine. With good shot placement and shorter ranges they can take elk/moose as well. Research the cartridge and make sure you stay within you personal and ethical limits.

Edit...whoops, was beat to the answer.

if it is a 7mm rem. mag. then it offers a increase in performance over the .308 you were using. if however it is one of the lesser 7mm's then you are not gaining anything.
.30 cal is a little larger than 7mm being 7.62mm in dia.
for moose the 300 mag would be better if you can live with the added recoil.QUOTE]

biggest difference I have found between the 7mm mag and the 300 rum is the recoil. the 7mm is a snappy roud, no doubt about it, especially when using a lightweight slim contour hunting rig; but the 300 rum is downright punishing to shoot for extended periods unless you are accustomed to shooting very heavy recoiling rifles like the big magnums or the afican game loads. my 7mm is a lightweight stainless/synthetic rem 700 with a 22" slim barrel and a super lightweight stock. It heats up after a few rounds so rapid fire benchrest shooter it ain't, but recoil is acceptable with no muzzle brake or special recoil pad. The only 300 rum I shot was a similar rem 700 with a standard (sporter) weight barrel and a wood stock and it was uncomfortable to shoot after 10 rounds; to the point that it wasn't fun shooting it any more.
Unless you are comfortable with shooting heavy recoiling rifles, choose the 7mm mag.
