Well Just traded in the Remington 700 30-06 for a Model 70 Winchester. For some reason I had always wanted (smart or not we can leave that out) at any rate, is it to large of a caliber to use for deer hunting. I do realize it may be a little over kill just wanting some opinions.
 
I shot a deer with my 300WSM and 165 interlocks at a little less than 100 yards this year. I suggest something that does not expand as violently like a corre lokt. It's really just a 300 WinMag in a short action. If you look at the ballistics, they are within one inch of each other for drop at 500 yards. In the favor of the WSM IIRC.

It is overkill. Why can the 30-06 handle every North American big game animal, yet you want to pay double for ammo in a gun that kicks harder? For fun, maybe. Practicality? Not for you. Not to mention it's not even the real thing. If you're a real glutton, get the Remmy Ultra!
 
i've got most of the 30 cal hunting rifles, including the 300 wsm, and all of my rifles have killed deer, and most have killed antelope. the 300 wsm is perfect for hunting, and a good deer whacker. enjoy your new stick!

the 300 wsm is a good performer on game, good accuracy, and not intolerable in the recoil department, though you will know when the gun has been fired.

Got to tell this story. A week before opening day on Deer season this year there was NO 30-06 available anywhere in this area except for two boxes of $49 a box premium 30-06 loads. One of the guys in our Deer camp had to pay that $49 for a box of 30-06 ammo after driving than calling around for hours for a stinking box of 30-06. He brought this up many times during hunting season it really got to him. He showed up after Christmas to show me his brand new 300 WSM. :) Seems when looking for 30-06 cartridges he noticed there was plenty of 300 WSM ammo around for $30 a box. :D
 
I've enjoyed my 300WSM and my .308 Browning lightweight stalkers. Both have killed deer. I recently put a different BOSS on the 300, the CR without the muzzle brake. Recoil is manageable. I reload, so can load as hot or mild as I want. The WSM is scary accurate with 150gr Hornady SSTs. Will be trying some of the new Hornady Gilding Metal in 150 soon.

I've hunted a Model 70 featherweight in .243 for years. Anything bigger than that is "too big" for deer in Western Oregon.

I also noticed the problem of Buying 30-06 Ammo in the Northwest corner of KY I think just a week or two ago I was able to find it. Gander Mountain, Rural King Wal Mart didn't have it. I traded my 30-06 and 120 for a brand new 300 WSM... Not to mention I got the Remington at a pawn shop for next to nothing. I think i done alright.

I tried the Hornady 150 gr GMX in my .30-06 last year. Here's a suggestion: clean the barrel thoroughly, and shoot 5 GMX bullets through the gun. Then clean the barrel again, using an aggresive copper remover like Sweet's 7.62. I had to put an unacceptable amount of effort into getting rid of blue patches when I did it with my gun. Your results may be different, but at least you'll know if they will or won't foul your gun as badly as they deposited material in mine.

.300 wsm...

is a perfect excuse to get into reloading ammunition, IMHO.

'Cept I was already a reloader when I got mine--wanted a step up from the .30-'06 WITHOUT going to the .300WM, and that's exactly what I got.

Have reloaded '06 ammo for years, very successfully, and just got the necessary dies and began reloading .300 WSM as soon as I had accumulated the brass to do so.

If you have an '06, do you NEED a Whizzie? Certainly not. What has need got to do with it?

It's unkind, but I sneer anyway at buds who have to rustle up "store bought" ammo and have trouble getting what they want. They shouldn't have waited until the last minute anyhow. And they sneer back at me when I complain about the primer shortage.

I cleaned my barrel today, but might run some more through it in the morning. I have 20 150 GMX loaded up and plan to go to the range tomorrow.

The theory is that the bullets are made of the material they use for coating bullets, so how does that leave more material?

I did use close to the minimum for the load with H4895. Interested to see how the new BOSS performs as well.
 
I have had the same issue with .30-06, .270, and .308 here in Miami. Nobody has them for real rifle testing (I have plenty of milsurp in 3006 and 308). I have a Sako A7 coming from Beretta this week for testing and when they asked what caliber, I said .300 WSM, because they have twenty boxes on the shelf at Walmart!
