I recently purchased an M1 Garand chambered in .308. I own a few other garands in 30-06 and shoot greek surplus ammo. What is the best grain to shoot in .308? How does the op rod stand up to the .308 cartridge? Can I expect premature wear on the op rod?

You'll be fine w/the 308. Use 150 -168 gr bullets same as w/30-06. Can go up to 175 w/o problems.

If you do not have a magazine well spacer block you might have a problem as your op-rod spring weakens. Mine started jamming on 8th round w/bullet point above chamber, then actually "batted" a loaded round over top of barrel onto shooting mat. Finally figured out that w/o spacer block, and, as the op rod spring lost tension, less upward pressure was being applied to the last few rounds in the clip and they worked forward in mag. well due to recoil of first 6 rounds or so. This allowed the bolt to "get a running start" before hitting base of 7th and 8th rounds, resulting in bullet tip jumping higher as it was stripped from clip. Replaced op-rod spring and problem solved. I put a spacer block in the rifle just for good measure, though.

Regards,
hps
