Took my 1912 Mauser (.308) out this weekend for a test drive. After I got the front sight adjusted correctly (small hammer), I found out that the thing shoots 8" high at 50 yds and 12-14" high at 100yds. This is with South African ammo. The closest setting on rear sights is 300.

How do I overcome this? Where can I get a forward scope mount?
 
This was the case with every military surplus Mauser I have ever fired. I have seen some that shot four or five FEET high. You can get new front sights from Brownells. Personally, I just handload a round that shoots close to the sights, but none of mine were real bad, about like yours or maybe a little less at 100 yards.
I put a MOJO adjustable rear sight on my Yugo Mauser.
It is important to me to keep the gun as close to original as possible. The only parts I add are ones that don't change the rifle in any way and the original parts can be put right back on.
 
aim for the belt buckle... otherwise your probably dead on at 300 yards ! just like the sights were built for

How's that mojo sight treating you? I sold off all my scope mounts so I could go back to the original look, but I sure would like to have better sights on at least one of my mausers.
 
Well, the MOJO isn't what I would call a GOOD sight. I wouldn't put it on a modern gun by choice. But, for a milsurp it works OK. It allows you to adjust the sight so that you can hit something without some crazy Kentucky windage. Having an aperature rear sight a foot away from your eye isn't the best, but it beats the original sight.
I own a lot of mil-surp rifles, but the only ones that are really bad are the Mausers. The Russian/Finn guns seem to be pretty close to the sight settings. My K31s are right on the button. My Sweede Mausers are also right on, but they start at 300 meters. But my k98, my Columbian Mauser, and that Yugo shoot way to high to make them enjoyable.

The basic rule is that the rifles with tangent leafs that begin with "1" are going to be better than those which begin with a "2" "3" or "4" K-31's, 91/30's, M-39's, and IIRC the SMLE's, Garands and Arisakas have base settings for 100 meters. Mausers vary. Some of the old Mannlicher '95's have a "short range" setting for THREE HUNDRED METERS!
 
My M38 Swede did the same thing. Different fronts are available but I don't shoot very well with irons so I got a no-smith mount from B-Square that fits neatly (and without any harm) into the rear sight mount. I then mounted a B&L 2x eer pistol scope that I had laying around and, tada! Sweet scout rifle Swede! Next time we have a TN Mafia shoot I'll get one of the guys to take some digital pics.

Sounds like it probably would be dead on at 300 - 400 yards.

If you you're sure it's where you want it (100 yards), you could always lower the front site (file, Drimmel, whatever) a tad. I've never liked the practice on old guns, but it works.

Lowering the front sight will make the gun shoot higher. You need a taller front sight.
I actually saw a guy shooting a rifle with a piece of wire attached to the front sight to make it taller. And, he didn't do bad with it.
 
That sounds about typical. My M48 Yugo Mauser shoots 6 inches high at 25 yards with Turk ammo. I need to take it to a longer shooting range.

Is the South African light or heavy ball? Supposedly, the heavy ball will be closer to POA. I just got some heavy 198g Yugo ammo that I need to try out. Try different ammo before permanently altering the rifle.

The scope mount idea is also good. I'm going to try a 4x pistol scope with a Darrel's scope mount on an M38 Mosin-Nagant next year. My current M44 M-N shoots slightly low at 25 yards, and to POA at 100 yds with the iron sights at minimum and the bayonet retracted.
 
A father of a good friend of mine has a 30-40 Krag rifle which we guess was sporterized back in the 1920's. Somebody foreward mounted a 2X scope on it maybe in the 50's and it is the best runnin pig rifle I have ever tried.
 
I put a taller front sight on my Swede M96, and now it shoots fine at shorter ranges.......................
 
glue a small piece of fiber optic plastic on the front sight, that will raise the front sight, and lower your aim, and provide a good sight picture.

Go mojo sights.
 
I like twoblink's answer, but where do you get this optic stuff, and what kind of glue do you use?

I put a high post on a Swede M38 and it works great. I got it from www.samcoglobal.com

I have a Czech mauser that shot high, and I replaced the front post with a brass flat-head screw. Just pound the head into the dovetail, cut and file to the right height, and paint it black. It's not noticable on a gun with a front post protector. Did I mention it's cheap?
