Gel Test results for .32acp and 9mm. Question, which of these loads would you use (please provide your choice for each caliber).

One other question, which is more important when evaluating a bullet’s effectiveness: Penetration or Expansion?

I think hollow point development came about to controll over penatration of magnums and to deposit more energy from magnum loads to the target. Ammunition manufactures found a big honey pot by loading everything with hollow points regardless of the rounds effectiveness.

Those are good tests, and highlight the utility of FMJ's in .32 ACP.

Problem is, goldenloki's tests were done a few years back and there have been some big advances in 9mm jhp ammo since,

One round that comes to mind is the Speer Gold Dot for short barreled guns.

If I remember correctly, the Gold Dot 9mm+P for short barrels was gelatin tested at stoppingpower.net from a Glock 26 with a 3-1/2' barrel.

The round was chronographed at over 1200fps, penetrate 16" of gelatin and expanded to (I think) 52cal.

If you are thining short barrels, the new 9mm Gold Dot for short barreled guns or the DPX round really shine.

I agree that .32 hollow points don't expand well unless fired from a long barrel.

As far as the so-called "short barrel" ammunition, I did some tests in two different guns, one with a 2.95" barrel (Kahr PM9) and another gun of similar size with a 4.2" barrel. I compared Speer Gold Dot 9mm +P 124gr GDHP with virtually same ammo except Speer added "Short Barrel" to the name. Here's the breakdown in feet per second (fpe) with a 4-shot average:


2.95" barrel 4.2" barrel

Speer +P ammo 1096 (330) 1245 (426)
Speer +P short-barrel ammo 1106 (337) 1206 (400)

Note that the short-barrel ammo gained only 7 foot-pounds over standard ammo in the Kahr. Recoil seemed the same. Also note that the longer barrel favored the standard ammo by 26 foot-pounds. But also notice that the short barrel ammo gained 63 foot pounds in the long barrel.

Just goes to show, there is no replacement for barrel length!

I would be very surprised if a Glock 26 delivered 1200 fps with this ammo. I would think it would be in the 1140 -1150 ft/sec range.

ABBOBERG, I did a seach at stoppingpower.net and the actual velocity was 1212fps from the glock 26.

When they do their gelatin testing, they use an average from five rounds, fired through denim.

From what I have read, I believe that the major difference between the regular Gold Dot and the short barrel Gold Dot is in the bullet and how it penetrates and expands.
