I have loaded up some 35 remmy in the past and it is a fun caliber to shoot in a 14" contender, especially when they are hand loads and just for punching paper.

It just so happens that I was nosing around in my storage room the other day and found a 500 count box of 148 grain full wadcutter bullets...and I LOVE trailboss powder...SO...

has anyone ever tried this? Seeing as trailboss is so wonderful for cast bullets...I figured that I could turn my 14" TC into a nice substitute for a 38 special.

I'm shooting a 357 Herrett. To shoot cast bullets you'll need to flare the case neck before seating the bullet, I use a 35 caliber Lyman medium "M" die.
Never tried TB, I use 9-10gr of Unique behind a 158gr cast SWC bullet. There's no reason why a 148gr wadcutter shouldn't work though.

You didn't mention if they're BBWC or HBWC. If the latter, remember that you need to keep the velocities well down to avoid the bullet skirt separating and potentially remaining in the bore.

Good point DickM. I would be hesitant to try HBWC's, but DEWC's should work.

I recently bought a 336 in .35 Remington and plan on trying Trail Boss it in myself one of these days.

yeah I was lacking a bit of info there for the suggestions.

they are HBWC and I was figuring on about a 6 grain load of TB to keep the velocity below 1000 FPS if I can. Seeing as its a contender and not a lever-gun it will be easy to make sure I don't separate the lips from the bullet base...I have seen some actually use these but with the hollow-base UP...might make for one heckuva hollowpoint. :D

If this load works out nice, then I might have to branch off and check out a few loads with bullseye or red-dot.

as for the TB loads in bottleneck cases, oh yeah I knew already...tried some in a 300 WinMag...thought I was shootin' a 30-30 at first. :)

range report on my 35 Remmy pistol.

Ugh.

10.0 grains of TB, 148 gr. Speer HBWC with the hollow base up to act like a big, nasty hollow point. 10 rounds at 35 yards they were all over the paper, but at least on the paper...SO...I am thinking mebbe I try some other powders as well as the TB. I figure the natural choices of Bullseye and mebbe some Blue-Dot loads...anyone ever try 1680 or Lil'Gun? Mebbe 3031 or 4198?

Also, same barrel, different path...loaded up some 250 Speer spitzers and 32.0 grains of IMR 4895.

My hand is now able to type...I shot 10 rounds of these monsters...brass showed no signs of pressure, primer looked perfect, and the action would unlock like there was nothing in it. But even with a Pachmayer Decelerator it was a rough ride. After those 10, I shot another 10 of Winchester 200 gr factory loads and those actually felt great compared, but man the fireball...it was impressive. :)

50-100 yard performance with the 250's and factory 200's were actually great. Hunting accuracy over the standard iron sights. Slight low hold at 50, POA at 100 and slight hold over at 125 or so. With that, I can keep ringing a 6x6 metal plate.

Also had some fun with a 14" 44 Mag barrel. I got ahold of some handloads my brother gave me...full house loads with 296 and various bullets...
Again...oww...I used to not be such a wimp...but jeez...the guy rolling these things must have been a masochist...:cuss:

I do believe I am going to stick with 231, 571, AA7 and some other more mild powders on that 44...I am sure any hog or other such critter as well as the steel plates and paper won't notice too much of a difference...
