357 mag vs 40 S&W

I have owned several 357's...SP101 3", 686 4", Security Six 4"...and I currently own a Model 19 2.5".
I don't find any of them difficult to control or shoot rapidly and accurately using full power 357 mag ammo.

"...The listed velocities on 357 mag ammo is from 8" test barrels with no cylinder gap. When fired from 6-8" barrels in real guns they coma up a little short. When fired from barrels shorter than 4" they come up a LOT short. You in reality have a very loud, 5 shot 9mm. Once you get to barrrels shorter than 3" you are actually getting a lot less velocity and power than would be possible with a standard 9mm pistol..."

Yet just up the page, we read:
"...Just returned from the range where I used a chrono on some 357 loads. 158gr bullet through a 6inch (686) ran about 1250. The same load through a 2.25 barrel (SP101) was about 1120. Recoil with the 6 inch was brisk, but the 2.25 inch was brutal..."

So, which 9mm 158gn load are you getting 1120 out of a compact nine? Because I want some for my Glock 26.

Look...I don't believe the 357 mag is some kind of magic fighting caliber. I do appreciate its versatility and ability to go from light WC target loads to full power magnum and everything in between. And, reading here I see the same individuals posting over and over about how bad the recoil is, including the post I quoted calling it "brutal". Try firing 20 rounds from a Thompson Center Contender with the old light octagonal 10" barrel in 44 mag using the original saw handle grip then tell me how brutal a rubber gripped SP101 is.

165gr factory ammo clocked at 1100 fps out of a G27.

I'm sure 357mag out of a snub nose revolver makes for a good flashbang stun effect. But other than noise and muzzle blast, I can't imagine that is has anything else on 40SW. I bet more people carry 38+P or lower recoil magnums in their snub noses than those using full house 158 gr magnums.

It'll be interesting when we start to get chrono data from the Charter Arms 40SW Pitbull revolver. Course, I'm sure the recoil of 40SW in a 5 shot revolver is no walk in the park, either.
