I'm looking to get a 357 sig of some manufacture. Any one want to contrast and compare the various models and makes, recoil, etc.?

I have a conversion barrel for my SIG 229 that i've shot a few times for fun, I'm sure it's a good round but I keep the .40 barrel in when it's sitting at home for what its worth.

I have two 357 Sig handguns. My first was my XD 4" Service Model, and I rechambered a 9x19 barrel to 357 Sig for one of my Witnesses.

I really like the guns and caliber. It's flat shooting and both my pistols are very, very accurate. I bought a Bar-Sto .40 S&W barrel for my XD and only shot it once. It's never been back in the gun, but I've got over 10,000 rounds of 357 Sig ammunition through it.

The recoil isn't noticable at all. I regularly shoot 10mm and .45 acp handguns, and the recoil is less that both those calibers, and they aren't bothersome at all.

Hope this helps.

Used to have a Glock 27 with an aftermarket 357SIG barrel (Bar-sto I *think*). I much preferred shooting it to the .40SW round. Lots of power for the size. I actually don't have a gun in this caliber but plan to eventually again (I got a set of used dies, so you know I'm serious! :)).

I would look at a HK USPc if you can find one. CDNN had them for very cheap about a year ago in 357SIG but I haven't seen them recently. If I come across one randomly I'll probably pick it up.

Have heard good things about the Sig P229 in this caliber, but have not shot it.

A rambling but enjoyable and interesting read about the round:

Same here.

When I bought my P229 last year it came with the .357 Sig barrel, I think maybe I shot through it once or twice. When I carry my 229 I always carry it with the .40 barrel installed. The problem for me is cost. I prefer to practice with the caliber I plan to carry in my gun and since it's cheaper to practice with .40 I don't use the .357Sig barrel very often.

The .357SIG has some obvious merits, but it's the not so obvious that make it a great choice. I'll only touch on the merits of high velocity low recoil and muzzle flash, at least in my SIG P226. The real benefit of the .357SIG is the necked down .40S&W case, it never fails to feed. It's because you are feeding a .355 bullet into a .400 opening, a smaller round peg into a larger round hole. Buy a pistol that all you need to do is change the barrel and shoot both the .40 and .357.

I have two glock 33 , one I use for work and one for after work carry I never feel under gunned with this round in a short barreled handgun ,great stopping power in a very concealable platform.

Thanks, so far, for all the great posts. I've been reading up on the round and it seems to be a good one.

I have a taurus 957 and a sig 229 in that caliber. Love that round, no downside what so ever. By the way , the taurus is my edc. never has failed to go boom when the trigger is pulled.

I bought an S&W M&P in .357sig. It's a lot of fun, very accurate, and a great multi-caliber platform. I bought both a .40S&W drop-in replacement barrel and a 9mm conversion barrel from Storm Lake. A barrel change takes all of about five seconds, and the pistol functions perfectly in all three configurations.

I bought 9mm magazines, so I have not tried to feed 9mm with the .40/.357sig mags.

I did this to have options as the M&P is my only high-capacity handgun. For a while there, .357sig was easy to find (but expensive) when all else was out of stock.

I bought a .357 SIG drop-in barrel for my M&P40. It functions perfectly and POA/POI is only about 1/2" lower at 15 yards due to the increased velocity.

I would shoot the .357 SIG more often, but the ammunition is just too expensive to justify.

In addition to a barrel change from 40 to 357 or vice/versa, is there a need for a multi-purpose or other magazine replacement as well?

m2steven,

For the M&P platform, the .40 & .357 use the same magazine and are marked thus.

The magazines are the same in all handguns, since the cases are the same diameter and roughly the same overall length. For my XD, I just buy .40 magazines, since they're more available than those marked 357 Sig. The only difference is the printing on the base pads.

In my Witness, I use .40 magazines, since this pistol was never marketed in 357 Sig.

Hope this helps.

I have a Glock 31 in 357 SIG that I really like. I want a XD 5 inch in 357 SIG but haven't come across one yet. I'm also considering a M&P.

Thanks for the responses. That cleared up my big question regarding going from 357 to 40. I appreciate all the responses to date, excellent material.

G31.

Ammo is fairly expensive and it's a handful to shoot. However, I decided a while back that if the fecal material ever hits the breezebox and I have to choose one pistol from my armada for self defense it will be the one. Lakeshore

I like the .357 Sig round. That said, I don't own a gun chambered for it anymore. I had a G32 that I liked, but never carried or shot it anymore. It's a hot little round that I enjoyed shooting. I wouldn't mind having another pistol chambered for it, but I was bitten by the 1911 bug and sold it off to fund another .45 purchase. A 1911 in .357 sig would be kinda cool, but I would probably be labeled a heretic and I am not sure such a creature exists.

As others have said, it is expensive to buy off of the shelf. If you reload you can usually pick up brass for a good price. I recall a F/S thread earlier this year where a gentleman was selling nearly a thousand pieces of brass for something like 30 or 40 bucks.

I can't really add anything else to this thread, I would just be parroting everyone else. It's a fun round, I say go for it.

I carry an HK usp compact sig everywhere I go.I have bigger and smaller guns to choose from but this is my favorite piece.Very accurate and a blast to shoot. It fits my hand perfectly.

I have a Glock 31 and an XD .357 and love them both. Great guns and both feel nice in my hand. The only reason I don't carry it is because I have a lot to chose from and just switched to a Kimber Crimson Carry because I wanted to start carrying a .45

If you buy in bulk, the price difference between 357SIG and .40 is minimal. Last time I bought it, it was exactly the same, but that was back before the gold rush.

I have SIG's with spare .40 barrels, but they rarely get used. They are a true drop in barrel though, and all thats needed. Magazines are not always interchangeable though. The SIG P239 has caliber specific mags, and while the 357SIG will work with the .40 mags, the 357SIG mags have an offset in the mag at the case neck on the round, which will keep .40's from being loaded into the mag.

A question for you Glock 31 owners. I recently picked up a used 31 which was basically, as new. I notice now as I shoot it, the locking block is impacting the underside of the slide and peening it in two places. The marks were not there when I got the gun, nor was there much of a smiley on the barrel when I got it, which leads me to believe it wasnt shot much. I've got about 500 rounds or so through it now, and its obvious its starting to pound it a good bit. I've been told this is common with the 357SIG and .40s, but I've yet to see it in any of the .40's I've seen that I looked at (2). Anyone else have this going on?
