I know I can make a safe load with that combo, but I can't find any reference for direct data with TB in magnum brass and the 140 LFP. I would like to know the velocity for a given charge weight and the recommended COL.
Hodgdon has data for .38, but not .357.
Lyman #49 doesn't either.
My Hornady downloaded manual is too old.
Any help?

I have loaded the starting load in the 38 and it is a very mild load. in fact on a 2" snub nose I had one that did not make it out of the barrel. I am going to up the charge, and or quite using TB in this round. Oh and the bullet I used was a 135 grain cast HP.

Go to the Hodgdon web page. Near the top is a data category, and a pulldown menu lists Trail Boss Reduced Rifle Loads. The pulldown is misleading, the page title is IMR® TRAIL BOSS® REDUCED LOADS FOR RIFLE AND PISTOL. Follow the instructions for a starting charge of 70%.

IMO: might as well go 100% with trail boss for best accuracy.

The 70% starting load won't shoot.

BTW: There is not enough room for too much Trail Boss and a bullet in the case at the same time.

You do not need tested/printed data for TB. Just follow these instructions,. As to seating depth, doesn't your bullet have a cannelure.?

Only a chronograph will tell your velocity from your gun.

I know how to load TB safely, I'm trying to get an idea of the velocity.

No cannelure on the Hornady lead bullets.

Don't have a chrono, that's why I was looking for data to estimate the velocity.

Why? Pardon my weenieness.

Now I understand what Mike Venturino was talking about when he did his article on TB in Handloader.

TB's a great reduced recoil powder, for obvious applications, like reducing recoil. It ain't about velocity.

If velocity is important, then may I suggest investment in a chronograph and different powders?

I use a lot of TB. I have a chronograph. I've never bothered to measure velocity with TB loads. Why? Because it's about having fun with big bores/heavy slugs. Who cares about how fast that big hunk of lead is moving!

High velocity is not important, just curious about the velocity when using Trail Boss with the 140 cowboy bullet.

Let's just drop it.
