Hello all, I'm new to both this site and to posting threads in discussion forums. I'll try not to foul things up.

I've recently purchased a .38 S&W SPL short-barrelled revolver from a pawn broker, and I'm trying to get a year of production on this rig. I've read some threads and I assume from the "K" stamp that it was a Military and Police model. Next to the "K" is an "A" and below the foot of the "K" is a half circle with the number "4" inside of it. The model# is "36" and the numbers stamped above those letters is "72588" The serial# on the bottom of the handle frame is "446470" The finish is blue, the handguards are wood, and the barrell is 1 7/8"

Can anyone help me get an idea what year and in what location it was produced? I'll scratch your back in return, if I can.

Not sure what year it was produced, but it is a Model 36, a five-shot J-frame as apposed to the larger six-shot K-frame. Is it really a .38 S&W, or a .38 S&W Special? If it really is .38 S&W, then you have something entirely different.
Welcome to The High Road. Stay a while.
EDIT: Normally we don't post whole serial numbers. We usually show the last three numbers as x's.

If it is stamped with a 36 it is a Chief's Special, aka as the Model 36; the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson indicates your serial number as dating between 1962 - 1969. The number on the butt is the serial number. Welcome to THR and enjoy your new revolver.

PS - Model 36's are .38 Special, it was produced by S&W in Springfield, Mass, and you have the classic carry gun, as mentioned above its a J frame, the small S&W frame.

Only to add that it should be a 5 shot revolver.

    Many Thanks

Hey guys, thanks a bunch for the information. You're all as sharp as tacks. I put 100 rounds through that rig yesterday, and I'm in love with it. I'll be carrying it from now on. I just need a good inside-the-belt holster. Anyone know where I could find such a thing?
