380 APC shellholder?

[just for fun]

Ordered a set of 380 APC dies and had planned on using a 9MM shellholder. Got looking at the catalog and 380's have their own shellholder! The 9MM miked .008-.011 larger at the rim (depending on case manufacture) than the 380 case. Shellholders are so sloppy fit I can't see why a 9MM shellholder wouldn't work. Anybody been down this road?

I use a #4 for 380 ACP and a #19 for a 9mm.

I have a Lee & RCBS .380 shell holder--using them both off & on for a Lee classic Turret
press.Neither one is a perfect fit--the .380 case slides forward about 1/16" in both shell holders
to center on the resizing die.

Most manufacturers offer the same shell holder for .223 and .380 acp. They are close enough that it works.

There is no way the 9x19 and .380 acp are going to fit in the same shell holder. The .380 acp has a nominal rim diameter of .374", while the 9x19 has a nominal rim diameter of .394.

Most 9mmP shell holders are already sloppy with a 9mmP brass because they're made to accommodate 10mm/40 S&W as well. Trying to use the same one with 380 ACP is just stretching it too far. Believe me, I've tried it.

I thought the same thing and tried it when I got a set of used .380 dies. It worked, but the bullets kept coming out crooked. They shot, can't remember how well. Took some time to figure out why they were crooked.

Correction: That would be the 32 ACP and 30 carbine.

I've never seen it listed anywhere that a 9x19 shellholder was intended to be used with the .40 S&W/10mm class of cases. The 9x19 has a nominal rim diameter of .394", while the .40/10mm cases have a nominal rim diameter of .424"/.425" respectively.

You may have gotten these confused with some other calibers, but that combination won't work.

Yes they do.
I have them.
But one is too loose for most 9mm and the other one is too tight for .40 S&W.

Yeah, Lee is what I was thinking of when I posted that and that is the one I've tried. I run mostly Lee dies and they come with shellholders, so I've never bought another brand. Lee #19 is listed for:
•30 Luger
•30 Mauser
•9mm Luger
•38 Super
•39 ACP
•40 Smith & Wesson
•10mm Auto
•41 Action Express
•9mm Makarov

I stand corrected on the listing for both calibers, but it's not very well thought out by Lee. No good could come from trying to use a shell holder that doesn't fit the rim and extractor groove of the case properly.

I have to admit that I have very few Lee products, other than a couple of die sets in calibers I don't load a lot of, such as .44-40 and .41 AE. Most of my equipment is from the other major manufacturers, plus a couple who are no longer in business, such as Belding & Mull and Hollywood.

No, you were correct in most cases and I was wrong. Since my experience was with Lee shellholders, I assumed they were all that way. I'm going to have to pick up a 9mmP shellholder from one of the other companies and try it out. Doesn't help with my Lee progressive, but maybe it could tighten things up for when I use the single stage.

That just isn't going to work in the real world, certainly not well, if at all. 9MM cases flop all around in a .40 shell plate or shell holder. (.40 does work just fine for .32-20 though)

I still use some Lee shell holders, but I have had to replace some as well. Hard to beat RCBS when it comes to shell holders, even if they are kind of proud of them.

Lee makes two shell holders for 9mm.
#6 or #19.

The #19 is the "universal fits none" size.
The #6 is more better as it is about .006 smaller and actually intended for the 9mm.

The reason they have two is, there have been 9mm cases made all over the world for about 100 years.
There is a lot of variation in rim size.

Sometimes, you get hold of some cases that won't fit in a #6 Lee or #16 RCBS shell holder so you have to go to the Lee #19.

.380 head is significantly smaller than 9x19.
You use a .223 shellholder for .380 Auto.
