395lb boar hog and pics...

    Here is a 395lb live weight boar hog we bayed and shot with dogs Monday afternoon. He dressed 335lbs, had a girth behind the shoulders of 4'9" and was 5'6" from nose to base of tail, and 6'8" tip of nose to tip of tail. He was just over 16" wide at his widest on top. He stood just a fraction over 36" high. He didn't have but one good cutter and it was only an inch long, his other was broke off clean at the gum and his wetters where wore down to nubs about an inch wide.

    He took a 20gauge slug high behind the shoulder at 10yds(it hit 5" below the top of his back, buried 8" into the body and lodged against the vertebra). Never even phased him, he broke, smashed a dog, and took off. Just as he cleared the top of the creek bank he broke hard right and I was given the chance to put a 1oz 12 gauge slug into his head. Entered just below and behind his right eye, and exited just in front of below his left eye.

    It took 3 stout men to drag him about 10' to get him to a place a 4 wheeler could drag him on out of the brush. It takes a heck of alot of hog to make the 400lb mark, despite all the claims of such. Heck we came up short by 5lbs.:D

    We only had one catch dog along that day, my little pitbull Bandit, he got pretty banged up by a hog that morning in another place and I am real funny about turning an already injured dog into a fight with a bad hog. I had him along, but didn't have him vested(The cut proof vest we use to keep tusks out of their chest and stuff). So I didn't turn him loose. Where he bayed the first time with a vest I would have let him go, it was open(no trees to beat Bandit against) and could have legged him and stuck him with a knife. But it wasn't in the cards, the vest was back in the truck a mile or two away and so it was down to sorting it out with the 5 bay dogs on the ground and some slugs...

    But no he wasn't to big, just didn't have a prepared catch dog along. In real thick Brush Bandit probably couldn't have handled him, just not enough dog. 45lbs against 395lbs just isn't enough, he'd get beat to death literally in the brush. On open ground the hog would have run with him, but Bandit would have slowed him up enough to run up and stop him.

    How many guys does it take to lift something like that into the truck??

    More than the 4 we had along.... We took the dog box off the truck(cage about 18" tall that dogs ride in) and used a 4 wheeler we had along to pull that hog up onto the dog box. Then all 4 of us stood the dog box on end, and then carefully tipped it back into the truck after securing his nose to the front. Then all 4 of us where able to slide the whole works into the bed of the truck. Some idiot named Steve forgot to load his come along we normally use to load bigger hogs...:D

    My small experience with mature boar hogs chased and taken (especially in warm weather) is that they are RANK smelling and taste much the same.

    Do you eat those things? If so, how do you cook them so they don't taste raunchy?

    I have found hogs to taste pretty good. The same applies to hogs as to deer though. The less aggitation before they are killed, the better the meat tastes.

    Hey St. Gunner,
    We killed a 150lb wild pig in northern California. They are tanks. I reloaded my .357 twice and used every round to bring it down. I've been dying to do it again. There's supposedly some good hog hunting in the eastern part of TN here. Good Kill!

    That is one huge, honkin' hog. Those things are like trying to stop a runaway 55-gallon drum of concrete. Saw one take 2 hits from a 220-Gr 'Bronze-point' .30-06 without even flinching. Issue was decided with 3 12-ga slugs.
