Some of the 3rd Dragoons had a 2 or 3 leaf sight on the barrel. Does anyone have one they could measure for me? I have a sight, but think it may not be a 3rd Dragoon sight, it looks wider than I would expect, and I believe only has two leafs, the fixed, and one that turns up for a longer distance. If you could measure width and height I would appreciate it, and perhaps a close up picture.

Thinking of installing this on my Dragoon.

On the guns that had the barrel sights, what did the hammer nose look like? Was the front sight any different than the hammer notch sighted guns?

Thanks for any information.

Here's a picture of an original.

The front sight on the ASM is too short to use the hammer notch rear sight - you can't even see it cause the barrel sight is in the way. Using the fixed blade on the barrel sight, the gun shoots about 2 foot high at 25 yards.

2 foot high. What they put it on there for? If it shooting 2 foot high can you still use the sight in the hammer or dose the leaf sight on the bbl get in the way? I'm asking cause this is the first time I've ever seen a Dragoon with one.

Thanks McGee, good picture. I was somewhat concerned about the barrel address, and how they did it with the leaf sighted originals. My gun is a black box Colt.

The sight I have isnt a Dragoon sight, I'll keep looking for one. I may use this one on a flat topped Ruger.

Anyone know where to find a 3rd Dragoon barrel sight? Dixie listed them years ago, but were back ordered when I tried to get one (early 80's?), and haven't had them in since that I know of. I don't think they've been put on repros in ages either.

Sounds like the repro was sighted a bit high for the lowest sight. I would have guessed 50 yards for the lower one.

I've never had the opportunity to shoot an original so I don't know what ranges the three leaves are designed to shoot at. On the ASM, the leaf sight gets in the way of using the hammer notch to see the front sight.

Good luck in finding a three leaf sight like that. The ASM 3rd models with barrel sight show up on Gunbroker regularly though.

You're probably right. 50 yds for the lower fixed leaf and 10 and150 for the other two maybe. I never tried mine at more than 25 when I took it out to test. The gun had some problems that cut short my shooting session & I've never gotten it back out to try since then.
