I changed barrels on my Savage model 10 Tactical. Took the 24" heavy one off and for jollies, put on another one one that I had threaded 1/2-28. It was originally an old Stevens .223 pencil barrel that some guy had cut down to 18" and re-crowned. After having it threaded, I installed a Wilson Combat A2 (birdcage) flash hider.

Not really expecting too much out of the shorter barrel, I took it to the range to sight it in. Turned out a lot better than I figured it would. I did have to let it cool off between 3 shot groups or it would wander a bit, but all things considered, it turned out to be a decent shooter.

Rifle: Savage Model 10 Tactical in a Choate "Ultimate Sniper" stock
Class - unlimited/target
Optics: Aim Sports 10-40 X 55 Mil-Dot set to 20 power
Distance - 100 yards (indoors)
Bipod front, monopod rear rest
Caliber .223/5.56
Ammo winchester FBI 62 grain open tip flat base match
Score 117-6X

The closeup is the best group after I ran it through the "On Target" program to check the group size.

Very good groups for that light barrel...but I have to ask why you purchased another bbl (particularly a lightweight one) for a rifle that has already been shooting so well.

Good question Mav, but it was cheap enough. #1, I wanted to experiment with a shorter barrel, #2, I wanted one I could get threaded and I didn't want to risk destroying the 24" barrel that shoots so well. I WAS looking for a 20" heavy barrel or one that had been cut down from a longer one, but this cut down Stevens showed up listed at $40 shipped and after some negotiatioins, I got it even cheaper than that.

I didn't expect any earth shattering groups out of the short, pencil barrel, and they do walk as it heats up as expected, but if I ever need to put a suppressor on it, I can now. To finish the project, I'll probably try and find another Savage left hand action (so I can use the stock I have) and put the short barrel on it, putting the 24" one back on it's original action. Hey, you're as much of a gun-nut as I am, you know we're never completely satisfied with anything - :neener:

The beauty of the current crop of Savage & Stevens centerfire rifles is that it only takes a barrel nut wrench, a padded vise and a set of the proper headspace gauges plus roughly 15-20 minutes of your time to change barrels, and within reason calibers on any of them. and finally, it's FUN.

True, the price was right and it's something to play around with. I don't think you went wrong at all...especially after seeing how it shoots. No question about it, Savage turns out some pretty good barrels (amongst other things).

Results:

Magnified Division/Target Class:
1st: KSCCHTrainer - 120-10X
2nd: Texas4x4hoe - 104-2X

Non-Magnified Division:
1st: crazysccrmd - 77

Sorry for closing out the match late this time around, things just got away from me this past month. With any luck the next match will be posted this afternoon.

P.S.: I think I'm going to drop the Unlim. Class and combine it with the Target Class for simplicity.

:)
