Anyone have any good starting points for 41mag with 210 gr plated xtreme type bullets?

I need to keep these around 1100fps. I tried 2400 and it is tearing the plating up and leading my barrel.

I have Titegroup, Longshot, power pistol, universal, li'll gun, and hp38 for powders to work with.

I would love to try Power Pistol or Longshot, I want to avoid the fast burning stuff if I can.

I use nothing but Power Pistol in in my ,357mag with excellent results but don't know how it reacts in a 41 mag.

I have Winchester primers and Starline brass.

Any help would be appreciated. I have to work today and won't be able to respond until after 5pm.

I shoot that bullet in reduced .41 Mag loads and it shoots well for me. I use a medium taper crimp on it.

10.5 Grs True Blue pushes them to about 1050 FPS from my 4" S&W and is very accurate. (I have no published data to back this load up as being safe, but it shows all the signs of being safe in my gun with my reloading procedure)

HP38 should work just fine. Problem is we are kind of on our own coming up with midrange loads in .41 Mag with plated bullets. I would look at HP38/W231 load data for lead and pick something in the middle to high range.

Yea, I found that out.

I can't get True Blue around here, I wish I could.

I'll try the 231/Hp38 and I think I'll experiment with some loads using Power Pistol, and longshot . If they work out I'll let you know. I have a funny feeling that Longshot won't be my go to load for some strange reason but I may be surprised.

Sounds like we're in new territory. We've been there before.
Thanks for the response.

Looking for info, I usually stay pretty much within Factory Load data and Factory lead but as most know that is a bit hard currently, Looking to see if someone can point me in the right direction. I can find 210 gr FP Xtreme bullets and currently have on hand H110 and Titegroup until supply starts picking up. I am loading a 41 mag. I know you use weight and profile as a starting point. I can find 210 JSP data but want to make sure that I am thinking correctly to use this as a starting point.

2400 downloads pretty well and you should get around your desired velocity if you use a standard primer and a load of around 15.5 to 16.0 grs.

Go to the Hodgdon Reloading Website for data using your available Hodgdon powders. The start loads should give you your desired velocities with any of the faster powders. Hodgdon lists faster velocities but they use a 10" test barrel that produces higher velocity than you get from a revolver by a couple hundred fps.

When I've used Berry's plated bullets I've loaded with 8.0gr of Unique and roll crimp over the shoulder rather than into the side since Berry's don't have a crimping groove or cannelur.

EEBest, you will pretty much have to use Tightgroup to keep your velocities down to moderate levels with plated bullets as H110 is volume sensitive and doesn't download well. Just be careful not to double charge with TG as its such a fine dense powder the large magnum case makes a double charge difficult to notice.

9.0 grains of Universal and a 210 grain cast bullet. Plated bullet should work the same. Depending on your barrel length, this could be close to 1200 fps, if it rips the plating try dropping back to 8.5 or even 8.0 grains.

Thanks Steve, What I suspected so might not get to much out of the titegroup I have left right now but enough to start. I never have gotten into Large volume reloading still pretty much 1 at a time even with XTP and Published data. so can gaurantee slow workup to what the NMBH likes and I can handle. I figure to start with min published for the 210 JSP

Bob that is the overall plan but have to wait for supply to pick up all I can find locally is Rifle powder and not much of that either. Barrel lenth is 6 1/2"

I can't provide the velocity, but I have done well with Berry's 210 gr and 20.0 gr of PowerPro 300-MP. I shoot an 8 3/8" and 4" SW 657 along with a 4 5/8" Ruger New Model Blackhawk. Cleaning them has been very straightforward. If there was any evidence of plating being stripped, I missed it and don't even know where to look, short of digging bullets out of the dirt and assuming they are mine. When that loads fires, it draws attention, so I would say it qualifies as moderate.

Which brings up the question of how one would know that plated bullets are a problem.

Ok, I've heard that 41 magnums are pretty accurate with just about any powder that is recommended in the right doses. I'm starting to believe these people.

Problem is they can't prove it to me, I need to prove it to myself, but it's getting easier and easier. I'm starting to wonder what I've been missing all these years.

Yea, I saw it in the past and browsed through it quickly. I need to read it in detail. The 41 magnum is turning into my favorite caliber, I find myself taking it and my 327 federal to range much more these days and leaving the 357's at home. The 41 magnum is just plain awesome and the 327 Ruger snub is just a riot to shoot at 25yds.

When I started out shooting handguns back in the late '70s the .357 was getting all the fan fair. A friend of mine had a super black hawk in 41 and insisted that I shoot it. I did and came within 4" of my mark at 40yds. I know it was a fluke but what a confidence booster. I've wanted one ever since but couldn't afford one so it took me the next 37 years before I revisited that desire and boy did I screw up in not buying one back then.

Thanks for the link, It's raining some much needed water today, after I get back from my weekly trip to my favorite LGS I will read that post in detail.
