how does blue dot work for mid range 44 mag loads 240gr coated SWC ?
or am I better off sticking with unique ?
used for plinking and paper punching

Worked for me (jacketed SWC's) in my Desert Eagle. Prefer H110 or AA#7.

I've used a lot of Blue Dot in my 44 Magnum reloads. I have had good results with 240-265 gr cast bullets in my 5, 44 Magnums, about 15.0 gr. with a 250 RNFP but double check that in your manual...

Blue Dot does not work well except at full power loads and with jacketed bullets. Anything less than full power, and the extreme spreads are unacceptably high, like hundreds of feet per second. Also, with full power loads in my 357 and I think my 44, I had lots of leading with cast bullets. Blue Dot worked very well with jacketed and full power loads but I don't recommend the powder because it is so inflexible.

Hey JO JO, I checked my notes like I said. I worked up two loads
using Missouri Bullet Co. Hard Cast Keith 240 grn. BNH 18,
WLP primers, Blue Dot, 13.7 & 14.0 grains. The 13.7 gr. was
the more accurate of the two. I used a Ruger SBH 7.5 inch
barrel. I felt it was medium recoil, no flash, medium smoke,
clean. Hope this helps. These are my results and observations,
please refer to a reliable source ,( Reloading Manual ) for
more detailed information.

Semper FI !

A little late to this, but a good mid-range powder for 44mag is BE-86. I liked it better than BlueDot in 10mm. Won't cycle a DE 44, though.

I used 10gr blue dot with a 310 gr gc bullet in a sbh. I used the upper crimp groove on that bullet. Was accurate and didnt kick much. I was able knock down 6" plates at 100 yds with it.

I just started working with BE86 in 9mm, I also picked up a pound of sport pistol,
Thinking of giving both a try in 44mag for mild loads and coated bullets

I love and use Blue Dot in my .44 mag for medium heavy cast bullet loads, burns very clean and is consistent . hdbiker

I've never used Blue Dot in 44 Magnum primarily because I did not have a 44 Magnum revolver until recently before I had curtailed my use of Blue Dot.

If i were to load 44 Magnum rounds today, i'd use H110/W296. I have lots of experience with the powder in other cartridges and am confortable using it in other places where data is available.

I do not have my reloading records in front of me at this moment, but if I remember correctly, I've used Blue Dot in 38 Super and 38/45 Clerke with great success. Also, I probably have a good 357 Mag load with 158 cast SWC and Blue Dot though not not as powerful as the jacketed bullets with H110/W296 loads.
