It depends. I have a Marlin 444P Outfitter with the 18" factory ported barrel. I added a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad and now I can shoot pretty much the full range of loads in relative comfort. I'm not sure how effective the ports are, but the difference in recoil pads (versus the hard-rubber factory piece) is night and day. My favorite load for it is Hornady's new light-magnum 265gr FP. It recoils like a 20ga with slugs. My last trip to the range was accuracy testing with about 6 different loadings ranging from 240gr SP's (powder puffs) to 300gr SP's, all at full-power. I shot 90 rounds in one sitting, from the bench, and wasn't too beat up at all.
The recoil would depend a lot on the rifle settup and load, but I don't have any problems with mine at all. I'm no glutton for punishment, either.
If you handload, the versatility of the 444M is outstanding. If you plan on only using factory loaded rounds, your choice is a bit limited, and quite expensive.
I love my Marlin and it is solidly on the "never sell" list.
