44mag brass

Hey All

I don't reload yet but plan to start in the next year or so to feed my Smith 629. So I have been keeping all the brass I've shot for future reloading.
I'm about to buy a bulk (1000rds) amount of commercial loaded 44mag rounds. I'm either going to buy from Georgia Arms (240gr JHP or LSWC) or I'm going to buy Federal American Eagle 240gr JHP.
Which of these has better brass from a reloaders viewpoint? I can get both for about the same cost after shipping.

Call Georgia Arms and ask them what brand and type they're using for the load you're buying. If its Starline, confirm that its not nickel plated.

IMO, Starline brass (not plated, which splits after a couple uses) is the absolute best for 44Mag.

I'll second that. All the new Ga Arms ammo I have seen used Starline cases. (the reloaded stuff uses other brass) The quality of Starline brass is great and they do not have a cannalure in the case. I appreciate that.

FWIW, Starline also sells their brass at good prices if you want to skip the first step in the shoot, reload, shoot cycle.

44 Mag brass

The worst brass is Remington nickel plated as it splits the soonest as it is the thinnest. The best brass is Federal, Winchester and Starline has a good reputation also.

In bullseye shooting Federal primers are the most reliable but some shooters like Winchester for the 50 yard range.

I buy reloading supplies from GA Arms at the local gun shows. The new 44spcl brass I bought was Starline. I have roughly a 1000 44mag cases in rotation. Most of my shooting is with moderate loads and I have had very few split cases. Nice thing about revolvers is you don't have the loss factor of seaching fro brass.

Why 44spcl, my range is real picky about magnums. Though I'd prefer to shoot a light loaded 44mag, its not worth the hassle from the old-timers.
