20981DE7-0079-47D0-8394-96F0D69AF447.jpeg I tell ya IMR 4198 doesn’t disappoint in 45-70. I’ve mainly loaded 300gr HP with it but decided to try the 325gr FTX this year seeing how I have about 100pc of brass for it. I was low on primers so decided to start at what Hornady claimed was 2000fps to match factory ammo. I started at 44.6gr and that got me the 3 shot bullseye below. The warmer I went the more it opened up and the more I took a beating. It also shot same POI as factory FTX and the 300gr HP. Gun season starts next Monday so we will see how it does. I’m pretty impressed to say the least. Now debating on loading some 44mag, 240gr xtp with IMR 4227.

That's my go-to for cast in the .45-70, and... for that matter... any cast rifle. 2000fps out of a big .45 is too much for me... but if you like that sort of thing, try IMR3031.

IMR4227 is my go-to for cast heavies in pistol, and for pistol cartridge rifles like my 1894 .41MAG. It burns well when you get a case full of it, not so well if you have a lot of air space in the case. I would work up your load towards that end, don't be discouraged if starting loads burn dirty, or give you poor accuracy.

I’m usually running right at max in the 44 rifle with IMR 4227. Good accuracy and make the xtp bullet open quite nice. The kick isn’t too bad on the 4570 rounds either.

Yea... that really makes even Magnum handgun cartridges perform! I hated IMR4227 when I first got it... then I loaded it for the Marlin, and now it's got a permanent place on the powder shelf.

I use AA5744 right now with the 300 Remington Hollow Points. I don’t load them up so fast. Still gives you a wack. Used to use AA3100, which a while ago was comparable to 4198. With my Guide Gun, slower or hotter, the only adjustment has ever been elevation. Looks like you have a good load in 4198. When you get a good load, keep it.
