45 ACP Ammo

I am only concerned with primer supply. Only couple k of each!:(

Me as well. Small pistol primers are impossible to come by in my area and online is a wasteland also. I would hate to be getting into reloading right now due to the primer shortage. It will be interesting to see if cases and bullets dry up soon. So far I can still find those.

Currently have 7k+ small pistol, 5k+ large pistol, cast my own Boolits while sitting on 200+lbs. of lead and enough brass to last years. Weak point for me right now is powder with only about 5 lbs. left.

There has to be stuff left out there because the range I've been working at has been busy every day and so far we haven't even begun to see a slow down.

Suggestions to START getting into reloading at this time are as useless as you can get. I've been reloading for pistol/rifle for almost 15 yrs. It takes a lot of time/effort to gather everything..when the population ISN'T hoarding everything!
Surveying my total ammo/reloading supply cache, I am only concerned with primer supply. Only couple k of each!:(

So when would you suggest someone who currently does not roll or even know how start? Telling them they are getting useless information is not helping anyone. While some parts needed to roll are hard to find right now much of the needed stuff is still for sale. So for anyone who has not yet started or learned yes they should start. This panic like all the others before it will come to an end. Why should those who have nothing now wait?

Main reason most reload is to save money and avoid the frustration of amo shortages.
YOU propose they ADD frustration of acquiring overpriced equipment and supplies(yeah yeah brass is cheap..the ONLY thing that is for reloading now) when more than one part is nearly impossible to find...to save money? Where? He's looking for 45acp now, not next summer.

I reload and I have stocked up on ammo as well. But this nonsense that if you reload you will never have to worry about a shortage again is just wrong. As if Powder,Bullets and Primers will never go short is BS. And please we need to quite calling this shortage a Panic or blaming it on the virus or the Election. Wake up and smell the coffee. We all know why this is a insane shortage is going and stop with the Politically correct cancer that has been going on for years now.
Right now the OP may find a box or two of 45.cal defense ammunition. Maybe a random box some where. But even the defense ammo is becoming less and less. Buckshot as well. I suggest the OP get up each morning very early. Start a systematic search using all the tools available. If Defense ammo and the high cost is all there is, then that is real life and suck it up. If you are new to firearms, then suck it up and buy as much as the defense ammo that you can afford and use it for range ammo. You have to know your gun well. Which means a lot of training and a lot of ammo. And that is a lot of cash.
This is what you call reality. It is what it is.

I must be missing this over priced equipment out there. I just looked quickly at Amazon, my favorite place to buy everything. Looking at it as if I had nothing right now. I see some press's and press kits out of stock but see several for sale with Prime. So this is the over priced stuff now? News to me <shrug>
If someone has not rolled at all and has nothing they "can" set up to do so only spending around $100 and get everything they need equipment wise. This is over priced?
I have long toyed with going Hornandy with their Lock N Load. See them for sale Prime as of now. Again Prime. So if someone wants to start from scratch they could do pretty well with say a $500 budget for equipment. Now to me? If I want something that cost $500 it's nothing to me, I can just buy it. Many seem to be a little out of touch with the rest of the world. A LOT of people would have to really be careful if they want to drop $500 on something "non essential" right now. Could blow one hell of a hole is many budgets. A LOT, and I do mean a LOT of people have just recently bought their first gun. Many of them never shot as a sport. So assuming they now have a gun, telling them not to bother to start to set up to roll their own because there is only "frustration of acquiring overpriced equipment and supplies" sounds more like someone who has lived through multiple "panic shortages" and did what many do. Ignore them until they get caught by yet another and lash out in anger that its everyone else's fault they still learned nothing. <shrug>
So for those who are new to this, want to learn to roll, I say jump in. If they do not have $500 to spend in one buy then by all means buy what they can afford now. Press, dies, ect. Can even start with "kits". I leaned on a Lee Kit, still use a lot of Lee stuff even after decades of loading. So lay in the stuff that is still normal price, it is there to buy today at the same price it was before this latest panic. Powder, primers, and bullets will have to wait and watch for. Most important thing for newbies, do not do as so many old hands do. Wait till this panic shortage is over, ignore the stuff when shelves are full, then get over the top angry and blame everyone else next panic shortage when you have nothing. o_O

Is this my ex-wife?

Sadly so few ever seem to learn. Only took me one panic shortage to learn and that was before Al invented the net. Now every time they happen by far the loudest screaming and crying is people who have lived through a few of them already. Suddenly it's lets blame someone:confused:
Of course then it comes out in some of the crazy posts you see here. People all kinds of mad because they again refused to learn from the past and are caught yet again. <shrug>
My favorite is "its hoarders". Now that one is great. I am sitting on cases of ammo, plenty of stuff to roll my own all bought when the stuff was on sale everywhere there was so much of it. So the ones who lived through shortages and ignored the full shelves and sales now blame others for buying plenty when it was cheap:confused:
Human nature I guess. Reuse to learn so run out and pee on the electric fence again and say it's someone else's fault :uhoh:

S This panic like all the others before it will come to an end.

This is a very dangerous attitude. Just because it always did such and such before, don't mean it always will.

I just managed to score some CCI .45acp from Ammofast. And not hiked up in price too horribly bad. Didn't get a huge amount (5 box each limits), but enough to make it worthwhile to get. I figure I better get what I can, while I can.

Look guys you can keep beating this dead horse and the Moderators will get tired of it and just shut this down if it makes you "feel better" <shrug>
The sky is not falling no matter how many want to say it is. The places that make all the stuff in short supply did not shut down. They are rolling 24/7. So this panic like all the ones before will end. Now if gun owners insist on voting in law makers who want to take rights away? Then yes in time gun owners will get what they have been voting for and lose rights. The old line be careful what you ask for you might get it.
In the mean time few learn, shelves were full for years after last panic shortage. Stuff was on sale weekly. Most ignored it till another panic was set off. So again the sky is falling and will never stop. Sure.
This shortage will end like they all did. Most who refuse to learn from the past will again refuse to learn. There will be another somewhere down the road. Rinse and repeat. In the mean time many will scream panic, everyone panic, nothing is ever going to be the same. Hey whatever works I guess. o_O

OK, being prepared is wise, but some people don't have the money to stockpile lots of ammo or reloading supplies, they are concerned with paying the rent, feeding the kids etc.
I for example would have a lot more powder and primers on hand than I do if it was not for the fact that CA say you can only have so much (not a lot by the way) or you get a nice room with a stainless steel toilet. So I make sure I always have less than they say I can have to be safe.
Of course there will be those who will say
1. Just move
or
2. You voted for the people who made the crazy laws.

However, "just moving" is far easier said than done, some of us have things like jobs and family.
Yes that is a solution but not an easy one, and one that only works as long as the Federal Government does not start behaving like the CA lawmakers.

As for voting, I vote pro gun, but sadly most of the population in CA is in big cities with tend to be liberal/anti gun.
I don't believe most gun owners vote for people who want to take their rights away, but if two people say yes and one person says no, then the yes vote wins.....

Yes sadly a lot of gun owners are kind of "stuck" in places that limit freedom far more. Many take ordering ammo for granted as they think it's always been like this. This was one of the very few times we won something. Not too long ago you had to buy ammo at a store and show ID for hand gun ammo. Only way to order it was if you had an FFL. So of course many places are now trying to do this again. After all we know the criminals order their ammo :fire:
Again though trying to get gun owners to vote for their own rights is like herding cats. Talk to some of the people in CA who are trying. They will tell you if they could get a few million people to vote as a block? They could really make some changes. There is FAR more gun owners in that state than that but, again like herding cats. So those stuck there due to work, family, whatever, have to do the best they can with what they have to work with. By far the biggest amount of crying and screaming is just people who refuse to learn. I keep thinking sooner or later they would learn but, the old line of a horse and water <shrug>

Actually, it's you repeating yourself over and over with incorrect assumptions of members here and your "last word" freakouts. Do us all a favor and give it a rest. You're not as wise as you think you are.

I like boolits, lol

I'm having a difficult time finding 45 ACP ammo pretty much anywhere, but especially online. Every online site I go to says they are sold out. For instance, Midway USA has almost zero 45 ACP ammo available, everything is out of stock. Am I just not looking hard enough, or can anyone point me to an online seller that actually has 45 ACP in stock? thanks for your help...

These Kiss Your A** good bye cycles are not uncommon occurrence's. A balanced approach is a stock of commercial ammunition and components. The Sky Is Not Falling but it seems that way to all the "Chicken Little's" in the world! Yes I'm in my seventh decade, I'm still here, so are my firearms, and the sun is going to come up in the morning and if not we've got bigger problems than todays occurrence's!

I load my own so I only have a puppy in this fight but as an RSO at a public range that does not sell ammo I wander through a brand new Scheels that just opened in MN. Yesterday, they had a lot of shotgun shells in all gauges. There was plenty of 40 cal on the shelf at about $17/50, and a lot of 45 in a couple of different variations. Federal Brass in .45 was roughly $36.99/100 and aluminum cased rounds were a couple of bucks less. they also had a fair amount of 38's but I didn't price those.
I also have a Streichers close and being a police supply it does not get a lot of retail traffic. They usually have just about everything one could want but their shelves were bare except for three boxes of .45acp Speer Gold Dot at $29.99/50. I did take one box of that leaving two for the next guy. The clerk said they had never seen ammo so backordered.

Give me a few more years then “just retiring & moving back to where I came from” will be easy & done.

The political climate out here is mind-boggling if I choose to dwell on it or get upset about it, but I choose not to on both counts. There are a whole lot more gun owners out here since the pandemic started. So the lefties will have to backpedal on the gun control agenda until after the election. I can’t buy the guns I want, but I actually shoot much more often out here than I could when I lived in CO and PA. I can buy all the ammo I want if I want to pay the prices. I don’t have the room for reloading equipment or time to reload right now. So I might end up shooting fewer rounds less often. It is what it is. You don’t like the rules but you choose to play the game anyway.

Just keep looking, Academy gets trucks in on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. They get some in every once in a while. I put their phone number in my favorites and call every Sun, Tue, Thurs. and ask do you have 45 ammo? Or 38 ammo. They are the cheapest around here and let me buy three boxes at a time. But stay on top of it. I also have my friends and family look when they go there with instructions to call me. It’s out there.....

Dry fire and for the 1911, known for a long time the proper use of a pencil and dry fire will help hone your skills. Still need a little ammo for practice.

My Academy gets a truck Mon, Wed, and Fri, they have a 3 box limit, I saw people grabbing the 150rnd boxes of 223 and cradling them like babies :), they had 50 and 100rnd boxes of 40 and 45, if I was running low on ammo my first stop would be an Academy and ask the gun counter when they get a truck and show up that day early. They don't know what they are getting when I was there it was mostly shotgun ammo
