.45 acp moon clip setup...

I got the S&W 325 Night Guard revolver I've wanted ever since I handled one at the Shot Show last year. I'm hoping somebody can share their experience on which moon clips and tools for removing spent cases are better. I hear that some people use plastic moon clips for range shooting and they can be loaded and unloaded without a tool. The tool that costs $40 looks like the way to go. I'm planning on buying a couple other revolvers that use moon clips so there's probably no good reason to scrimp on this stuff.

I've never found a need for a moon clip loader - they go in easily enough, plastic or metal.

For removal, I cut a tab of about 70% of the circumference out of a piece of 1/2in ID copper piping (for 45s). Leave it a few inches long and crimp or crossbolt the end. It quickly disengages the fired cases and holds 6 of them in the 'handle' ready to dump in the spent brass container.

The plastic are fine for plinking/general use. Not so good for carry or competition - not quite as firm a grip on the cases and a little too wobbly for speed reloads, even with RN bullets.

I use the rimz plastic moon clips with my 610. I've never had a problem with them.

Here's a thread with an illustration of what a home made de-mooner looks like. I prefer a bit of length so when you remove the spent casing, you can drop it in a coffee can at your feet.

I use a tubular demooner from Brownell's similar to those described here. I have one for the .45 and a slightly linger one for 10mm. Both work fine, but I find I mostly don't use them, but load and remove the cases from the cylinder individually. I also use .45 AR a lot more than .45 ACP in the 625.

I made my own demooners out of hot water pvc pipe, cut it about 6 inches and it will hold six emptys

Get the moonclip tool. I love it...works great. It replaces a whole bunch of moonclip stuff that I bought. I think it's the best tool.

When you go to empty the moonclip, put the case into the removal loop. Press your thumb on the back of the case. Roll your wrist toward the tool. It'll pop out right away. If you try to pull it straight out, your hand and fingers will get sore since it requires much more force.

I had great luck with Wilson Combat moonclips for 45 ACP. Ranch Products also makes good moonclips. I had good luck with their clips for 10mm.

Ah, but they were chambered properly and had a real firing pin back then so you could.

The newer 625's chambers are cut too deep to headspace on the case mouth, and they have a shorter frame mounted firing pin.

Many if not most of them give unreliable ignition without using clips to headspace the cartridges.

The easy solution for the newer 625s with the long chambers is a long firing pin. Several people make them. I use the one from Cylinder and Slide shop. Ignition is always good.

I use the Rim-Z plastic ones, hundreds of rounds through each, no problems. I keep a few steel ones around, just in case I might ever want to use my 1917 for something more serious than range trips. No real need for any removal tools.
