Hey guys,

Its tax time...:) and Im not married yet! so I will be getting a CCP in .45

So far I cant choose between the Colt Defender (I would replace or make some grips in Wood) Or... the HK USP .45 C

Heres what I have

Price- Colt=$650 HK=$750
Looks Colt=9/10 HK=8/10
Cap. Colt=7 HK=8

I really want to spend as little as posible. Any thoughts would be great, I have only carried at home befor, I will be getting my CCW permit soon, so I will be carring it with me when I am in the city/ Road trips...

Anyways Thanks guys- Ian

what would you recomend?
I have a bEagle 9mm Subcompact, but its heavy and big. I kindof want a .45 I have had several .40sw and they are so so...

I own a Baby Eagle II in .45ACP. Holy cow is it a shooter! It even impressed the CCW instructor so much that he set down his 9mm CZ and shot my Eagle instead. Little hiccup with mine, but love the thing! If you get a Baby Eagle/Jericho and need a CCW holster, drop me a pm and I'll give you instructions on what/where to look and how to get it ordered.

KBI/Charles Daly will be distributing them as the Jericho very shortly. If you can hold out for their release, I'd pick up one from them since Magnum Research is no longer the importer. However, that may mean more to you since MRI isn't importing them now.

Just curious, but why just look at the HK or Colt? XD has a .45ACP compact, Glock has the G30(double stack), G30SF (double stack), G36 (single stack), and a host of other manufacturers have .45ACP in compacts. You could even explore Sig. Ask around about the HK customer service before you consider them....back in 02 they had a bad rap for horrid customer service, hopefully that's changed. That said, the USP's are great products.

As for the 9mm. If you don't mind polymer and want some quality for your $$, I would suggest the XD9SC or the XD9 compact. Yeah, I know they're Croatian, but I've owned 2 XD's so far and have yet to be disappointed. Of course, I love my Glocks and my IMI / IWI products.

Find some folks that have what you like and see if you can shoot them. The more models you shoot, the better you'll understand what works specifically for you. Or you'll start an addiction that you'll never be able to feed.

I think Im going with the HK. I think I had better stick to DA/SA and not get a 1911 style, I am so used to double action guns. I dont shoot that much so I really dont want to spend $$$$$$$ trying to get good habbits .45 ammo trying to master the 1911.

The only thing i'm worryed bout is the size for 2 reasons...

1 CCW... I heard that it is on the big size for being a compact

2 Recoil from the .45 round. I have shot alot of .40sw in all shapes and sizes but only have fired a 1911 gov't. the thing that worrys me is being able to have good control with follow shots. Would it behove me to start thinking 40sw? or is .45 good?

How does the p2000 stack up against the USP C??

Ok I will play devils advocate here.

I dont care about looks. I dont care about capacity as long I can feed it 6 or more. But nothing extreme like 15. I cannot count that high and start to lose count after 5 or so fired.

CCW situations wont care what gun you got with you.

The Colts I looked over and found them to be solid guns, more pricing but ultimately what I would call "Old School" traditional guns with safetys, a hammer in the back to deal with and a smaller frame that may not soak recoil. Rubber grips was not availible except on the target match colt that was outside of budget and way too long for CCW.

Love the colts. But turned towards the XM's M&P and A few others that I call generics.

For the money I had to spend, my gun plus the stuff to go with them was all I can do for the budget and Im happy.

But I keep looking at that 45 Colt Commander sitting there in the case with it's stainless steel wondering how it will do at the range.

Maybe one day I get it too.. for the hell of it.

40? 45? what is the difference really?

I tell you why I got a 45, the shop was OUT of the 40 that I was drooling over for a long time. They had 5 40's I think. All sold out. Oh well, the 45 does just fine.

If you are used to DA/SA, I think you're being wise at not introducing another action-type that you would have to spend more resources on in learning. On the other hand, few handguns feel as good in the (my) hand as a 1911, and I don't even currently own one, largely for the reasons you stated.

I've often heard it said that the .40 is the best of both worlds between the 9 and the 45, having more power like a .45 and more capacity like a 9. To me, it is also the worst of both worlds, having the supersonic crack of a high pressure, high velocity round coupled with the heavier recoil of a larger caliber. I have never warmed up to the .40 which puts me in the minority.

One thing about the .45 - no one has ever claimed it doesn't work.

The most important things to consider here are your personal comfort levels. Looks should not enter the equation, but , we all know they do. More important things to think about are how and where (on your body) will you carry. Is the gun comfortable to carry or is it too bulky/heavy. Is the finish durable, I prefer stainless or high tech coatings, blued guns are not durable for concealed carry.

The recoil from a .45acp is less than that of .40sw unless you are shooting high pressure .45+p like CorBon. Even the +p from Hornady that I carry in my .45 is mild compared to most .40sw ammo.

1911's are very easy to learn and SA guns are usualy easier to shoot accurately because of the short trigger pull. If you haven't owned either in the past then you will be learning a new gun regardless of which you choose. So again I suggest you handle both and get what feels most comfortable to you. Both guns are top shelf and will fill your need.
