I did a search looking for a load for my .45 Colt using Allaint 2400 and Hornady 250 Gr. XTP... I have only found data for the 300 gr. XTP. I saw were Cocked and Locked used the .45 colt and 2400 for a "Pig Popper" and that is what I was working for. I'll be shooting it out of my Ruger Blackhawk and my Rossi mod. 92 lever action rifle.

Does anyone have a load they really like using the 250 gr. XTP and Alliant 2400 in the .45 colt??

Thanks,
DT

Not too sure but I think you might want to be a bit careful here...

I THINK that the Rossi can't handle the same pressures that the Blackhawk can take....so be careful!

Load data from Hornady's 6th edition shows a 300 gr XTP...

2400

16.5 gr for 1050
17.3 gr for 1100
18.0 gr for 1150

Definately a thumper at both ends, I would say....

Yes sir, I don't plan on getting real hot and heavy for the Rossi.. I am like you and have only found data for the 300 gr XTP.

What would be a plan of action for the 250 gr., knock the charge for the 300 gr. down 10% and start with 14.8 or so??

well, If i were to pay attention to the original post, I could have given it to you. :) lol

250 gr. XTP-HP
2400

19.7 gr for 1150
20.2 gr for 1200
20.8 gr for 1250

sorry bout that!

Just for fun, I looked in Lyman's 47th as they have rifle and pistol data for the Colt.

They show 17.5 2400 as max @ 1236 rifle, 814 pistol (71/2" Blackhawk).

Interestingly, Unique can equal the 2400 with 9.3 @801 out of the pistol but only makes 1102 out of the rifle.

My experiments with 2400 in Colt were unsatisfactory at standard pressure levels. Large Deviation and lots of unburned powder left in barrel. Unique worked MUCH better with about the same performance.

I use 2400 in the 454 Casull and love it....but that is a different animal altogether. Unless you are hot-rodding the Colt above normal pressures, I believe you will like the Unique better.

And, the Puma is a strong rifle and is offered in 454!! Doubt you will hurt it with heavy loads but it WILL hurt your shoulder! Good luck.

Thanks RR,

I usually use Unique but my brother-in-law gave me a pound of 2400 that I would like to try out. Once I load some test rounds up and they don't perform well for me then I will probably use it as fertilizer since it didn't cost me anything.

thanks again

2400 is, or was, kinda nasy. A couple of cylinders full and extraction might get a bit difficult. But that was due to unburned (I think..Chronographs weren't common) powder.

H110 was a bit cleaner. As was the new Norma powders. Heavy crimp was required for all, as was CCI Magnum Small Pistol Primers for 2400 and H110. I dunno, but suspect that the heavy, with the bullet well crimped in the brass case, charges of 2400 and H110 that didn't burn were blown clear by the gas from the barrel/cylinder gap. I dunno if that was what happened then or will happen now.

I respectively suggest that a hard, or soft, cast 158 or 250 Semi-Wadcutter moving along briskly at trans-sonic speed is bad medicine for anything that walks, crawls, swims, or glides through the air, water, or on the ground.

salty.

THIS DATA IS FOR RUGER, WINCHESTER MODERN LEVER ACTIONS, OR T/C CONTENDERS ONLY

With that out of the way, Nosler lists 20.0gr of #2400 as max and most accurate load with their 250gr bullet.

I have used this load with great satisfaction under a Hornady 250gr XTP through both my Ruger Redhawk (1200fps), and Winchester m94 Legacy w/24"bbl (1600fps). I have found the Nosler assessment to be accurate and correct.

Use a STANDARD LARGE PISTOL PRIMER.

It is NOT "nasty", 2400 is NASTY only at pressures below what is is designed to operate at. TheRE is essentially NO powder residue with these loads. 2400 is NASTY only at loads below 17.0gr in the .45lc. Below this level, switch to Win231, Universal, or Unique.

My Winchester shoots 3 shots to 1.5" at 100yds with iron sights with this load. Have witness's too. A very suprising rifle. "Gobbs" of power too.

Shoot very accurate from Redhawk, 2" 6-shots @25yds.

For even more "horse power" try this over a Lee .452 310gr FNGC. Same velocity, much more recoil. Pressures still mild for the STRONG firearms.
(see above warning, DOO NOTTTT SHOOT THIS IN YOUR SAA OR REPLICA)

Not a load for a timid shooter however.

20 gr. 2400 with the 250 XTP runs around 1200 fps and is quite accurate in a couple of my .45 Colt revos'.
