45 Colt bolt rifle.

Another thread in this forum got the wheels turning in my head.
I have a Savage 110 .308 that I haven't used for years. I'm dreaming of replacing barrel with suppressed 16" barrel, caliber .45 Colt. Anyone here done this.
Wouldn't this be great for hog hunting, day and night?

I've wanted one for years. Closest thing out there is the 77/44. I've got a 77/357 and really like it a lot , just so handy and compact . get a lot of extra zap from a carbine length barrel. If you do this keep us updated and if it were me, I'd chamber it for 454 casull. That way you've got some serious power if you choose to use it otherwise just shoot 45 colt. If it all works out maybe I can copy you.

A bolt in 45 colt would be neat. I have an CVA hunter 44 mag rifle. I like it a lot. It looks like an inline muzzle loader less the ram rod and breech plug.

You're gonna have some issue getting it to work with a rimmed cartridge.

45acp, 460 Rowland, 45 WinMag, 45 Raptor would all be much easier to coax into working.

All of those also utilize the same 308win sized bolt face as well.

Might as well just do .45 ACP. Easier, and the extra case capacity of the .45 Colt is pretty useless when you're trying to stay subsonic. Yes, you could run heavier bullets, but any expanding .452 bullet over 250 grs. is designed for the. 454 Casull and .460 XVR, so they might as well be FMJ at subsonic velocities

I always thought a 45 acp lever would be nice or a nine. I went with a 45 Colt Roller for my project. A 45 Colt bolt would be great. How would the Savage handle the mag? Doesn’t Ruger use their rotary mag? I love your idea.

Feeding that rim is going to be like feeding dimes sideways; I think you should find a .452/4 AR wildcat, preferably in .470 bolt face brass.

The fly in the ointment will be getting the rifles magazine to work and to properly feed the rimmed 45 colt cartridge . It can be done but will take some work ... which = money !
How about a 45 caliber round based on a shortened 308 Win. case ... I'm sure a round like that is out there I just don't have my copy of "Cartridges Of The World" handy .
A lever gun in 45 Colt might be your best bet ... How about a single shot rifle ... a Handi-Rifle chambered in 45 Colt would be nice too , you can reload fast with a little practice . My Dad hunted with a single shot and carried two spare rounds between the fingers of his off / left hand ...he was fast on the follow ups the few times he took a follow up shot .

Thats whered id be if i was insistent on efficiency and both cost and performance.

If i were going cheap, id just spin a 450 bushmaster barrel on.

I think a 45 Colt bolt gun would be really neat but I just don't see a way to get that operational.

Thank for all thoughts. The reason for wanting the .45 Colt was because of how effective they are with a .255 gr. SWC in a Ruger SA revolver.
Of course that is on whitetail and not subsonic.
Will give it more thought, maybe a suppressed lever rifle or trade the Savage.

Either way, subsonic loads are made for a number of big bore rimless cartridges that will have a much easier time of being chambered in a bolt action.

I already have a 450 Bushmaster bolt action so that is what I would choose. It would probably be the most economical for you too.

Why not just get a 45 Colt lever gun that is already easily available, easy handling, fast repeating shots, and more capacity?

I wish I had gotten a pic of just the rifle, but I got two pigs with this ruger 77/44 that has a fully suppressed custom barrel in .44mag. I remember that the barrel was madein Kansas.
Maybe you come Google the ma ker and talk with them about .45colt
I like your idea. I'm a .45colt fan....however.....thevrifle I was shooting was loaded with 300gr subsonic .44s. That is probably very similar to what you're after ballistically.

I picked up a Pedersoli Mississippi rolling block in 45colt. Barrel isn't threaded but it's definately cooler than a bolt action.

You might get a old Moisin Nagant reciever to feed it by bending in the extractor Claw from .570 to .515 or a SMLE receiver claw from .540 down to same. I would imagine the Moisin cation would be easier to modify but both actions along with the 1914 enfield are designed to feed rimmed cartridges so you could block the front of follower in the mag well.

That would be a good move. Sure like shooting my Henry in .45 Colt.

I've been hoping someone would make a bolt-action .45 Colt or .454 AR upper for the last few years. .454 fits in an AR mag.

Yeah that would be kewl ! Would take a bolt with proper head and exrtactor and a barrel with proper feed ramps to take the presentation of cartridge from magazine. A metal lipped magazine could probably be done with careful plier work , A .454 would probably work the gas action OK, and the .45 Colt a manual feed . That would be the way to go ! Maybe I'll ask Paul Lietner-wise what he thinks !
