.45 in M&P or XD?

Good choice.

I shot both extensively before making my decision. M&P by a nose. Grip shape and ergos are better for me and when it all boils down how does the gun feel in your hand. I felt the M&P also had less muzzle flip than the 4" XD. And last but not least, country of origin still means something to me.

I have not shot an M&P, but folks say good things about them. I did own an XD .45 and they are fine guns. Personally, just from holding one, I would go with the XD. I really like the XD platform.

welcome to thr. i would go with the xd. i have 2 and love em. they are reliabile, accurate, and just plain fun to shoot. they are easy to maintan and they are backed by a great company.

both the xd and m& have great ergos, but have been using the xd series for a whle now.

would take the xd though i am sure that the m&p would serve you just fine.

Welcome to THR and congrats on the purchase of the M&P.

I was going to vote for that one anyway. They fit my hand a lot better. The XD45 I shot beat me up too.

pmbiker nailed it. I have nothing else to add to that.

Yeah, don't shoot the GAP ammo out of the M&P. Something tells me that won't be good.

I recently picked up an M&P 40. I probably shouldn't have, but I did anyway. I have a Glock 22 already.

IMO, they both shoot and handle almost identical over all. Muzzle flip and recoil with .40 ammo was pretty much the same. However, the M&P has a much more ergonomic grip, is a bit slimmer than the Glock. It is more comfortable I thought. I can't say if it shoots any better since I am not shooting any pistols real great these days. It functioned perfectly.

When I field stripped them both, the internals look very similar. I would swear the M&P is just a glock clone with a better designed frame.

I've owned the XD, but it didn't handle the SWC bullet profile reliably. I have a new Glock 21 SF on the way, as we speak.

Update on XD Purchase

I posted back on 4-26 that I was considering the same purchase decision. Yesterday I became the proud owner of my first XD chambered in 45 ACP. It's a compact stainless. Went to the range today and fired 100 rounds of range ammo through it with no problems--mostly in three inch groups. I enjoyed shooting it and think I'll be able to improve accuracy with a bit of practice.

Thanks for all the thoughtful comments in this thread and on THR.

How does that compact .45 shoot? The 5" barrel tactical version is very smooth and easy to shoot.

How does it shoot?

MechAg94 asked: How does that compact .45 shoot? The 5" barrel tactical version is very smooth and easy to shoot.

MechAg-

I'd say it shoots well. Recoil as you would expect from a 45 ACP (which is acceptable to me). The attached photo (sorry for quality--I took it with my cell phone) is of my first 10 round group using the compact magazine (10 rounds as opposed to the 13 round extended mag which is also included). The black is 4 inches diameter. The detail isn't great, but 9 of the 10 shots are in the black. I had shot other XD pistols previously, but this was my first attempt with my new pistol and a compact. Overall, I am pleased. I think I'll keep it. As you said, "smooth and easy...."

I'm looking forward to putting several hundred more rounds through it, and then I'll be comfortable making a full appraisal. ;)

Thanks for inquiring.
