Im considering buying a Henry Big Boy in 45LC. Is it safe to shoot Hornady XTP's in this gun or would it be a problem with the tube loading magazine? If not what is a good bullet that can be used in both the 45LC Black Hawk and a Henry Big Boy? I'd also like to know if this rifle can handle the heavier loads that a Ruger Black Hawk can or If I should be looking at a different brand of rifle altogether.

Try Hornady Leverlution ammo,it was designed for lever guns. I shoot ole reliable flat nose 225&250 gr bullets out of my 1873 Uberti and they work fine. I have also shot some 300 gr with it too.

The Henry should be able to handle any factory load. The 45 Colt doesn't need a "Hot" load to work.

I had a 45-70 and didn't like the recoil. I loaded down 300 gr remingtons to around 1600 fps. That was still a deer killing SOB of a load. Big bullets at moderate speeds kill just fine.

I have a Henry 45lc and have shot about 100 rds of 250gr, and 45lc + P works fine as long as the round is not to long it should chamber and shoot the rifle is realy solid hardly feel the 250 gr,rds the lever action smooth as butter.
Some don't like to scope lever actions but I use a scope mount from Henry that fit right over the reciver and now I can see were the rds hit..

I Realy like the Henry but wish it was a Henry in.44mag .Oh well have about 300 rds left of .45lc I have to shoot up.
