So... I'm a brand new owner of a S&W 460 tonight, I celebrated Heller today. Anyway, the only printed load data i have on it is in my 7th ed. Hornady book and it lists data for the 240g and 300g XTP only. Now i'm interested in exploring the full potential of this cartarage. I'm looking for several different loads, a speed load "flat and fast", a work horse load mid 250's flat but more oomf, and a power load 300g+, and the big daddy 360g+. I looking for better data on these loads, printed is perfered. Also other reloaders experence as so far as their loads have gone and progressed. I am a Hornady bullet fan and i have had wonderful experence with their product. I thank you in advance for your assistance. BTW brass will be Starline , its on sale at Midway, and the barrel length is 8"

I use Starline brass with Federal 210M primers. The bullet I've settled on is the Hornady 45 caliber 250 gr. SST/ML (muzzle loader bullets). Since it doesn't have a cannelure, you would have to invest in a Lee Factory Crimp Die unless you wish to shoot your revolver as a single shot. This bullet over Alliant 2400 gives me excellent accuracy with about a 7.5 inch drop at 200 yards.

As far as getting my 460 S&W to shoot well, I had to work harder at it than with any other cartridge I've loaded for. It broke a couple of scopes, scope mounts came loose and a lot of loads I tried gave unacceptable accuracy. Of course, your experience may be different; my Encore has a slower twist than your S&W Revolver. The gain twist on the S&W revolver starts out at 1:100 and ends up at 1:20 at the muzzle; this may give you better accuracy with some bullets than I got.

Over the years, the novelty of working up a bunch of different loads for a given cartridge has worn off for me. I wanted a flat shooting load legal for Ohio deer hunting and the above load is about as good as it gets and the only one I still use.

What dies are you using and are you putting what kind of crimp on it?

Lazuris...

You should check out Ranger rick's bullets out of Homer Alaska.. He makes 265gr, a wicked looking 300 gr TC (like the sst), 370gr and a real chunk of lead 535gr. All are hard cast and prelubed. Very nice looking bullets and come very professionally packed. He's a real nice guy also. He'll give you his (work up to on your own) load recipes also (just ask).

Redhawk1 put me on to those bullets.

I'm using lee carbides and still trying to solve the crimp die myself. It's a decision between a custom lee factory crimp or a redding profile crimp for me.

Forgot to add in the previous that those come w/gas checks already on the bullets.

Also, I just ordered 200 once shot (Hornady/Starline mix) 460's from www.brassmansbrass.com for 66 plus 9.85 for shipping.. Should be here on frid or sat....
