Does walmart sell 5.56 ammo? I have never seen it since I've owned my AR (around 4 months). I have only found it in one gun store. Walmart always has .223 in stock around here.

I haven't seen it but I wouldn't say they never sell it. Of course you can shoot .223 just fine. If you want the hotter 5.56mm I'd do mail-order. Check out Ammoman, Ammo To Go, or Midway USA.

Walmart's price on a box of Remington 55 gr fmj last week was $17/box of 20 rds.

You can buy a box of 50 online for that if you shop carefully.

Just to clarify, any gun chambered for 5.56 NATO can also shoot .223 Remington just peachy.

For all practical purposes except war, they are the same thing.

Some .223 is actually loaded as fast or faster then some 5.56mm depending on bullet weight.

If you are looking for real GI M193 FMJ, or M855 green-tip steel penetrators?
No, Walmart doesn't sell surplus ammo.
