5.7x28 Ammo Availability

One of my LGS has SS196 (or whatever the lead-free is called) for 30$/50!

I said "No thank you"

I'll probably be holding off on shooting my pistol until the election year nonsense blows over. Most of my local stores are out of stock, but it's plenty available online (but spendy). I think this stuff will be expensive (or in shortage) for a little while, as all the PS90 guys hoard as much as they can :p They go through a lot of it, I know...

When I walked into LGS it had good supply of G20 mags and 10mm JHPs at internet prices. They're all out now. Gee, I wonder what happened?

The 5.7x28 shortage has been discussed on dedicated FN forums. FN . . . SAYS. . . more will come on the market soon, but we all know how that goes when a manufacturer makes promises.

Considering the current situation, my pistol remains in the safe. I don't know if prices will come back down when/if production puts more on the shelf or not, but I sincerely hope so. It was already pretty pricey when I was getting it for ~$21 a box.

I noticed the pistols are still holding steady at right below 1000$ online, so I don't think new owners are driving up the demand... Most likely FNH just hasn't been keeping up with the sales they've been making:

What? We have to make more ammo now that there's 3X as many Five-seveN and PS90 owners out there? Who knew?

I really don't know just how many new Five Seven or PS-90s that have been purchased as of late, but either way, they definitely dropped the ball on keeping up with demand. Unless, . . . quite a few people bought up several thousand rounds and ran them out of their ability to keep up. Of course, having said that, it seems like they have been low for quite some time now. Makes me wonder if something else is going on.

Sure, there are a few places that have a supply of it, but much of it is approaching the $26 per box mark.

Commercial 5.7x28 ammo is loaded by Fiocchi using Hornady bullets.

$26 per box of 50 rounds is equivalent to what one would pay for a box of 50 9x19 loaded with Hornady hollow points from Fiocchi.

Yea, $26 + shipping is certainly not as good as the $23 on the shelf it used to be a few months back, but unfortunately there just isn't any 'cheap' ammo for the 5.7 - No WWB or Wolf equivelent.

I think part of the weapons reputation for reliability is the fact that quality ammunition is the only kind that exists.

I came very close to purchasing a PS90 and a FiveSeven. Really like the design of both the guns and the round. But, in addition to some CA-related issues, being in the computer industry I've seen what it's like to be beholden to a single source supplier. If anything goes wrong and/or if their attention goes elsewhere, you are 'home alone'.
Too bad. Very nice guns and a very well-respected company overall.

Yup. I wanted a FiveSeven but the ammo is scarce here in MA and we cannot get ammo shipped to us. Horrible but we make it through. FN makes some nice firearms.

Yeah, this sucks. I've been waiting for a backorder to fill for a long, long time now.

December? I better stop shooting mine.... I'm down to about 10 boxes which is lower than I like to be on ANY caliber.

As far as the hardware goes, FN is one of the largest weapons manufacturers in the world and is certainly not going anywhere, not while they're still winning U.S. service weapon contracts right and left.

As far as the ammunition goes, FN isn't the only one making it, though Elite Ammunition is pricey. I don't know if Starline or anyone else is making brass for it, or if anyone other than EA is making non-FN ammunition. That's a bit of a hairy situation for someone who doesn't load their own.

Makes me wonder if something else is going on.

My thoughts exactly, I can't help but wonder if there's a shipping container being held up either here or overseas on some beauracratic/political baloney...or Somali pirates, I guess :D

FWIW, my LGS recently got about 1000 rounds in, (I only bought 100 at the time, 22$), sold out in two days(@27$). They still have 5.7x28; 10 round-packs of SS190 AP shrink-wrapped, for 50$ No, thanks, I said...

Perhaps this is related; my local Cabela's was out of 22LR...in addition to just about every other pistol-caliber that kicks less than .41magnum. I wasn't an interested party during the last Shortage, was 22LR hard to come by back then, too?

(PS, I love all the SHTF-ers who think NATO-used cartridges will still be widely available during the End Times, when we can't keep 'em on the shelves for a damn Prez election :D)

PPS: After looking into this 5.7 issue online for a bit, I find that many people are referring to SS197 as "high-performance," "penetrating," and "rare". When did that happen? I thought SS197 was the ubiquitous mouse-fart (okay, mouse-bark) load FNH foisted upon us after bowing down to Brady Campaign pressure on their Cop Killer bullets?
