5.7x28 pistol?

Are these any good? I’ve been interested in one because ammo is plentiful out here and reasonably cheap and it seems like it would be a reasonably powerful cartridge for close range coyotes from a tractor seat. Any opinions?

 

I think they are an interesting novelty. I would be interested in seeing one in a compact format. like a M&P shield. To kill a coyote at short range, why not just use a more "normal" handgun?

At bimart out here in Oregon they had 50 rounds (i can’t remember the brand) for $18. My cousin has tried to use his 9mm but can’t hit anything moving past 15 yards. On the tractor I’ve had them walking 20 yards away. My friend says they are a very flat shooting pistol round. I’m just curious

 

Not an interest of mine, if it were me I would look into the following:

Walther WMP, 22mag
Keltec PMR 30, 22mag

Just know, like the 5.7x28 these will be loud without muffs, but if you are in a tractor seat maybe you are already running ear pro.

And if you have a suppressor that can handle 22mag, the Walther is milled for a reflex sight can be bought with a threaded barrel to knock down the noise at the shooter. Or if no suppressor a forward blast diverter would do wonders on it, as far as the shooters noise level is concerned, but it might obscure the sights if not using a red dot on it.

 

Very loud, flat shooting, very little recoil and alot of fun. My only hang up would be the price of ammo but if you can pick it up for under $20 for 50 I would say why not.

 

I’ve also been looking at the keltec. I already have a Henry 22wmr so I wouldn’t need new ammo. I might have to look closer into that. Price wise for the guns, I can get a keltec pmr 30 for $449 or a ruger 57 for $678. How loud is it compared to a 9mm?

 

Ordered a 5.7 but backed out after looking at ammo and reloading stuff.

Not sure what I’d really have any use for the caliber so I wrote it off.

 

It's a short but loud bark. 9mm out of a pistol is fairly loud in itself. The fireball out of a 22mag pistol is impressive to say the least.

But with a 22mag the loadings are predominately loaded with slower burning powders for rifles so there is a lot of gases out the end of the barrel. There are some short barreled loads for self defense that do better in that regard, such as the Speer Gold dot 40gr and some Hornady Critical Defense 22mag to be considered.

I have the Ruger 57 and a Desantis OWB holster. It is a blast to shoot. A little expensive to feed but still fun.
The accuracy is good and there is no recoil, but it is loud.

 

Another option which in my opinion is better than the 5.7 on all accounts would be the 22TCM.

Comes with both 9mm and 22tcm barrels. But more $ than you are looking at.

 

This interested me until I compared it to the .22 WMR I already have. A lot of money for very little more if any performance improvement. The WMR doesn't come with AP bullets is the main difference.

It is a fun round to shoot. I have the fn5.7 I bought on a whim and kinda regret. It's fun but not at the price of ammo.

 

Can’t hit anything moving past 15 yards with 9mm? Sounds like he just needs practice, not a new caliber. Even with a 9mm handgun, bullet drop doesn't become noticeable until you get well past 50 yards.

 

I sold my FN 5.7 pistol. When I bought it I also bought a case of ammo. Can't recall the price of the ammo but lower than the price is now. It is not a round that is easy to reload and component price is expensive just for the bullet, The brass is tricky to mess with.

It was a must have cool gun to have but the thrill did not last,

To big to carry, to expensive for target range blasting.

 

How is it out of a carbine?

Other sources list the velocity of the 5.7x28mm 40 gr round considerably less. around 1600 FPS. I agree that the 5.7x28mm is more powerful. But using advertisements rather than test results is not valid in my book. Also my 22 Mag has a much longer barrel 6.5 inches Velocity is 1400 fps according to Chuckhawk. Still the 5.7 is more powerful. I also have a 22 mag rifle so it makes more sense to me. But then I have better defense pistols than either. It would make sense though to others and because it is reloadable it is attractive.

 

Yea he got a 2.5” barrel, I can’t hit much past 15-20 yards with my sr22, maybe a coyote since it’s bigger but I’ve missed every squirrel I’ve shot at at that distance. I know that’s not 9mm but I personally think any gun with a barrel length less than 4” is kind of pointless. It looks like most 5.7s are between 5-7.5”. Thought maybe the much flatter shooting would help. I could be dead wrong though just trying to learn more I guess.

I think of 5.7 out of a pistol as being the same as 22mag out of a rifle. Reasonable for coyotes but id much rather try to find room on that tractor for a beater AR. I trust the .223 out of a rifle far more than the 5.7 out of a pistol and you get exponentially more range.

 

The only 5.7 that has my interest is the Ruger LC carbine. Handy little package, with a barrel long enough to get the most out of the cartridge.

 

Yes this is an interest too, but I have a ruger pc already that’s good 80-100 yards. We have houses about 200-400 yards around so I try to use shorter range guns as much as possible. We’ve already got complaints from them that they can hear bird shot bbs on their roof( the one at 200 yards the others never complain) but we never aim near any house and bird shot ain’t going 200 yards so I’m not sure what they heard. We just try to be very careful
