Bird shot will definitely go 200 yards. I can guarantee that I would only hear that from you once. There is no short range gun if you are pointing it in the wrong direction. Careful is not what you are doing. Grow up.

 

If I point a shotgun to the north and I fire bird shot into a forest at a flock of birds, 200+ yards to the south across a creek and another line of trees in a 3-5mph summer breeze I have a hard time believing that house was hit. It’s called neighbors who don’t like any sort of gun and complain about everything. I never point or fire in any direction of a house, building, or any place that could be dangerous, that’s just stupid. Anybody that shoots should know that. Unfortunately you don’t get to choose neighbors. These particulars don’t like propane cannons or helicopter sprayers either. Thanks for the sage advice though. Based on what I’ve read from everyone I’ll probably just skip the 5.7 and stick to my .22wmr. Doesn’t seem it’d be worth the money when I already have the wmr.

If I were your neighbor and you come onto my property with that attitude and without a darn good reason you wouldn't like how you leave. A pitter patter of what you assume to be birdshot on your roof from what you assume to be me isn't a very good reason and i'd let you know as much right quick. You come onto my property and get aggressive when I know for a fact, as the OP is stating he does, that I did not fire in the direction your house, you'd be told to leave...then made to leave.
And then we wouldn't be friends. I think people generally prefer to be friends with their neighbors. Life is better when people are friendly. Perhaps you should learn to be more polite upon first approach. This is TheHighRoad, after all.

 

If I could get the ammo that cheap I would buy one. I typically see it for around $0.70 to $1 a round.

 

Larger shot like BB or #2 will certainly go 200 yards but probably doesn’t have enough energy left to do anything. Smaller shot like trap load peters out pretty quick. I’ve seen lots of trap ranges pointed right at a highway only about 200-300 yards away.

 

We use #8 23/4”. It seems like it doesn’t have much for range or maybe I’m just a poor shot at birds over 80 yards, try to keep shots to 50 yrds. That was a special deal only at that store after checking around. Sportsman’s warehouse is $.80 a round for finnochi which is the only brand they carry

 

I have the FN and the Ruger in this Caliber as well as a .22 Jet, which is about the same. Very loud and hard to reload without feeding issues.

 

Lots of ammo available locally. 50 rounds for $47.00. But most pistol rounds are close to a buck a shot these days.....

 

What I would do for a 5.7x28 1911 that was really slim. Ho-hum.

 

The cartridge is too long. You need a Coonan sized 1911. But a very slim one!

I’m with you there. If ammo can be had for $30/box too that makes it better.

 

Maybe Henry will chamber the new homesteader in 22 TCM .That would be about like a semi-auto 22 hornet .but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it , nor a 30 luger which would be equally cool . Something to consider though , is a .17 HMR semi-auto or lever action with a red dot sight . Fast ,accurate not terribly loud . and not much danger from ricochet .and still give you some range .

 

I like my PMR 30 for feral cats and ground squirrels. I think the .22 Magnum is light for anything bigger. Some think it's adequate for fox and coyotes with proper shot placement and apparently poachers like it for deer. 5.7 is no doubt better for most applications. Cost of ammo and initial investment in a firearm have kept me away. I think the Ruger is butt ugly, the FN less so. The S&W is the best looking of the bunch.

 

I had a 5.7 AR upper years ago but never bought any pistol chambered in 5.7. I didn't keep that upper long since it fell between my rimfire AR's and my 223/5.56 uppers.

Yes small calibers such as the 5.7 and HK 4.6 do have their place. But what hampers them is the restrictions placed on the type of rounds that civilians can legally possess.

 

My 22TCM runs at almost 1900fps (chronographed) out of the 4” 1911 barrel. It’s a significant upgrade over the 5.7 if it only gets 1600fps.

It IS fun to shoot. It IS extremely loud. AR15 loud. But there’s almost no recoil.

Opinion: You will have to practice with either quite a bit to avoid a bad flinch. If you can do that, either of those is a useful cartridge, as is .22mag.

 

This cartridge should get more attention than it does. The verified chrono velocities I've seen are very impressive.

If I got a bottle necked pistol cartridge it would be the 22TCM.

I agree. It will never happen unless other manufacturers take it up and other companies load ammo for it.
I took it on as an experiment when it was new and really like it. So much that I started reloading it. (Couldn’t afford to shoot as much factory ammo as I wanted to!)

Finding the RIA bullets used to be easy, but they have been unavailable for several years. I just got in some Speer 40gr 22hornet bullets that may work well. That would be a great source.
RIA seems to be making plenty of 22TCM ammo, but the components don’t seem available any more. I will adapt.

 

RIA 1911 4” HC .22TCM/9mm combo. They still sell them, as well as the full size models. It’s also a great shooting 9mm pistol. 17rd mags.

 

Something else I do not need and must have...

 

For anyone considering 22TCM. Here is some additional information that should be understood.

There is 22TCM ammo and there is also 22TCM9R ammo.

The 22TCM was the original loading with a longer COAL that fit into a 1911 sized magazine/magwell.

In efforts to capture a greater market they came out with 22TCM9R ammo that has a shorter COAL so that it could be utilized in Glock sized magazines/magwell (as well as other firearms) with simply a barrel swap to 22TCM9R. The 22TCM9R gives up a bit of performance and it's bullets are seated a bit further into the case than I would like to see for ease of finding bullets and loading for.

I like Glocks, but for me if I'm going to consider a 22TCM/TCM9R it would be the 22TCM and get the most performance and ease of loading and just buy one of the RIA 1911's.

Rock Island has a single stack 1911 22TCM and a double stack 1911 22TCM, depending on what a person wants. I would like to get my hands on a double stack RIA to gauge it's size and see if I would go that route or the single stack.

What's nice is they also make a bolt action rifle that utilizes the double stack RIA 1911 magazines, would make a dandy pair bumming around the ranch or woods.
