5.7x28 pistol?

Something else I do not need and must have...
Every time I take it to the range someone asks what it is and where I got it. Happened again yesterday! Truly a fun gun!

FYI: It’s a well made pistol. double stack, uses the original .22TCM cartridge, but will shoot the .22tcmR.
I find the double stack hand-filling and comfortable, but you need to try one before buying. Grip choices are limited. The originals shipping now are quite good, but the early ones I got were crappy plastic. I found great ones at

I think there may be more grip choices out by now…

I'm in between whether I want the slimness of the single stack or capacity of the double stack. The double stack also has the benefits of sharing the magazines with their bolt action, which I think would be very cool to bum around the woods on backpacking trips with the kids. We like to shoot when we get into the back country and get our camp set.

I would like a bolt action.22TCM, too. Have you ever seen one in stock anywhere?

There have been limited attempts to reload this cartridge. I think maybe the system in the S&W M&P 5.7 might lead it to function more reliably with reloaded ammo than the delayed blowback of the other common models. Has anyone tried reloading this round with enough volume to draw any conclusions about brass life and ability to tweak loads for individual guns, be they rifle or pistol?

About a year ago I was looking for a long-range handgun for shooting beyond 50 yards. This caliber would fill the bill to a tee, but I also wanted a reloadable cartridge. I went with a 357 Mag instead, which I've been more than happy to use. However, the proliferation of new 5.7 models has me looking at it again for that purpose.

One of the main problems with reloading 5.7x28 is the polymer coating which is needed to aid feeding reliability when using the P90 magazines. Guys on the FiveseveNForum have figured out that the polymer coating is not really needed the feeding this round from pistol magazines. And some have tumbled their cases to remove the coating for use in pistol magazines without issue.

One other big issue is how sensitive this round is to even the slightest changes in powder charge weight. There is not much room for mistakes in such small bottle necked cartridge.

If anyone wants to do further research into the 5.7x28 and reloading it, check out the FiveseveNForum at: https://www.fivesevenforum.com/index.php?sid=1a82f37261e3ffa0b6f33a6778db8093

It also appears that the shoulder is blown forward a good bit upon firing. This is what I’ve observed from a buddy’s Kel Tec. I don’t think it would be worth the hassle in reloading, but YMMV.
To my way of thinking it’s a novelty caliber and I can do everything and more with a 22 Hornet.

The shoulders blowing out slipped my mind when listing the negatives to reloading the 5.7x28. I know it is popular for some to reload the 5.7 but I never felt that it was worth the effort myself. And I agree that the 5.7 rally doesn't offer much especially if you have rifles chambered 22WMR or 22 Hornet and rifles in 223.
