50 yard air rifle 10 shot challenge in the wind

My son challenged me today to 10 shots at 50 yards, in the wind. He is 13 and is a great shot with anything from an airsoft gun to an M1 Garand and everything in between.

I was shooting an RWS, he was shooting a Crossman. We both used Crossman Premier pellets. The wind was right to left 10-15 MPH. As such, we both had a flyer or two to the left.

If you ever shot .177's in the wind, you know the grouping can be all over the place. His scope was high on elevation. Safe to say if scope elevation had been lower, he would have kicked my butt. He's the top target, I'm the bottom. I consider he won based on grouping.

Tomorrow if the winds settles down, we are going to try this at 100 yards.

Free hand or rested? Good shooting Ive done some plinking at 100 with a tuned QB78 its a real blast and mine would still go thru and thru on a coke can full of water.

Update on this with no wind. This is an 8 shot group. Did 5 before the video and 3 during. Takes too much memory to film in HD more than a min or so. I like the 2nd shot.

Filmed through a spotting scope. Pretty nice group I think for a 7g pellet at that distance.

With my Beeman 400 I used to practice on a 1" property line post at 150 ft off hand. I could routinely ping that post when i was in my prime.


Air rifles can be exceptionally accurate.

What velocities do your air rifles get? I have a 10m Anshutz Superair 2001 match air rifle. I've never actually tried going past 10m as it's about the limitations of the small property but it's a blast when I can't get to the range. Most people in America think they're "silly European things" but I don't think most folks have seen how TINY the 10m targets are and it's incredibly challenging. I believe the X ring is about .200"...the pellets are .177". Not much room for error!

Airguns don't get enough credit/respect in the shooting world. Some of mine will outshoot most of my rimfires.
I'd love to have one of the old 10 meter recoilless springers, like the FWB 300.

Haha Jaymo, I feel rimfires don't get enough credit/respect in the shooting world either. Most people see it as a plinking round or a child's round and not a serious competition round. My Walther GX-1 came with a 1/4MOA 50m test target (I can't accomplish that). My accurized Ruger 10/22 will perform sub-MOA at 100 yards if I'm skillful enough to combat the wind and I've taken it to 200. Folks on the precision rifle forums have taken them to 300+ yards.

The most accurate pistol that I own is an FWB CO2 gun. The test target was a single hole the size of a pellet +/- a tad through which five shots had passed.

You seriously think I need better backstop for a .177 pellet than 2x8 treated wood and a 24" diameter tree at 100 yards? Not to mention the angle we are shooting at. It's at least 50 ft elevation from where we are to the tree. Any shot that would miss the tree (and he didn't) would go into the grass. The pellet has already dropped 16-18" from a 50 yard zero shooting at 100 yards. There is no where for it to go except into the grass and at that point roughly has only 5ft/lbs of energy.

Yes....in a neighborhood where there are likely everything running around from kids to pets.

If someone gets hurt or property gets damaged a lawyer will have a field day with those two pictures.

The two cities that are around me think that an air rifle is a fire arm as well....you might want to double check with the local law enforcement to double check that as well.

All it takes is one pelet to do something you don't want it to do and that nice house/truck/ and even your freedom will be gone.

I also like how eye protection is present, but not on they eyes.

First off, that is my house in the pic. Nobody was home. There are no kids, nor pets in sight past that tree in the yard. I see nothing unsafe about what we are doing. He shoots everything from this RWS to AR-15 and M1 Garands. The only thing I will agree with you on, he did forget his glasses and I did not notice until after he shot.

Sorry you live in a place that considers "air guns" weapons. I live outside city limits and on nice weekends, you can hear shooting all around me.

looks good to me. I don't see anything wrong with the picture. Shooting and competition between father and son is great. Keep up the good work.

For me growing up, I never knew what a bench rest was. All of my .177 pellet shooting was off-hand or off-tree. And, who could afford a scope? Great exposure for your son.

I live in the boonies as well 13ac....as the the video without knowing what is behind the target I can't say. For me with all the houses that close on the photos..... all it takes is one mistake, one failure for something very bad to happen....and they can happen to the best of us we are all human after all. Those pellets will travel further then you think...and hit harder then you think at distance....it does not look like he has a red rider there.

All I am trying to say is when I look at something I see the what can go wrongs and if that passes MY level of feel good then I don't shoot there....for ME there is just too much "stuff" around your shooting area and too much possible traffic for me to feel good about your shooting area.

I just advise you to remember that statement if/when anything goes wrong and the lawyers come a knockin.
