    Second shot?

If you miss on the first shot it'd still make one heck of a club!

Seriously, I wouldn't want to carry one but I'd sure like to try one out.

I'm sure it would be silly for concealed carry. If you want a nite stand gun, go for it. Get a 4". The recoil is not as bad as a .44 MG. I can fire off five shots in a relatively short period, on target. It's called practice. I have 3 of these things and feel quite comfortable with each. Very loud, you bet. Last time I fire my .357, it was loud too. Inside your house ,eveything is going to make you deaf. As far as backup shots, by the time the BG realizes what's happening to him, you already have the second and third shot going at him. As far as gun size and penis's, I'll let the guys that worry about that to worry about that.:uhoh:

I carry mine 16 hours a day as primary. Magsafe ammo to prevent overpenetration. Main benefit is the intimidation factor to avoid having to shoot at all.

There is no reason to carry a s&w 500 other than to be a smart ass. Yes you are more than physically able to ccw a s&w 500, but it is borderline ridiculous. There are a million better choices.

On at least one TV show, CBS's 'Bones', loosely based on a real lady forensic anthropologist's work with the FBI, the 4" .500 Magnum has already been a purse gun! The lead character, 'Bones', told her FBI agent 'protector' in the 1-31-07 episode that she had her own protection - then brought her new 4" .500 out of her purse. When asked where she got it, she replied 'The mall!'. I am sure theire was an anti-gun message there - but, still, it was neat to see one that way. Of course, banter about 'size matters' followed. I watch too much TV!

Would firing a magnum revolver like this without hearing protection really make you go deaf after one shot? While I'm sure it's terribly loud, that sounds like "internet gun knowledge."

Maybe it'd only cause some degree of irreversible loss, not instant, permanent, total deafness?

My first reaction is hey, if it rings your bell, go for it. My second reaction is that it is severe overkill and you or he won't shoot it much. Have fun either way.

Without hearing protection a shot from a short barreled 500 mag will be almost as harmful to the person behind the trigger as the unfortunate bastard in front of it!!!

One thing that could put it in perspective for you, the .500 magnum delivers foot-pounds that are in the neighborhood, or just a bit over, of a .30-30, or the 7.62x39.

If you defended yourself with a .30-30 lever action, or an SKS, because either of those was the rifle you had at hand, would everyone be freaking out about the "overkill"?

I personally wouldn't find it practical to carry a 500 for various reasons, mainly because I live in WI and can't carry anything.  However, it does illustrate just how gonzo-crazy you have to go in handgun loads to approximate even "modest" rifle loads.

However, now that poor guy in AZ who shot the violent bum in the park who rushed him over shooting a warning shot at his attacking dogs is rotting in jail, in part because he carried a 10mm Glock. It was painted by the DA as a ".40 magnum", and "more deadly than what the police carry", I'm now putting more faith in the "Ayoob advice" that it's not a good idea to carry anything "too crazy" or overly non-PC, or handloads.

I just recently had the opportunity to shot a Smith .500 in the 2.5 inch version. Found it easily to handle if your accustomed to shooting a big bore, short barreled handgun. Much like a hot loaded .44 magnum in a mountain gun format. Would I carry one on a daily basis in the city, probably not, I like my .44 special 696 or my Model 29. But if I lived in an area where I may encounter large game or unsavory two legged vermin and collateral damage was not a factor, I don't see a problem with it.

I have a 4" S&W 500 that I reload for and often shoot at an indoor range ( just to be  ). Yes, you can make reduced powder loads that recoil in the neighborhood of a hot .357 magnum. However, the 500 is still, IMHO, much too heavy for a reliable defense gun. In a situation where reaction time counts, that excessive weight of the 500 can really be a costly disadvantage.

If you are indoors you also have to consider over penetration through walls. The last thing you want is to kill an innocent person in another room/building (e.g. sleeping child, neighbor, etc.). For good indoor defense I would suggest a shotgun with #4 shot. For outdoors, a good CCW weapon should do the trick.

**And for those that argue shooting a human with a .500 is "overkill", I would argue that in some cases it could be the exact opposite. Physics-wise, you deliver the most kenetic energy to a target when the bullet stays in the target. When the bullet just passes straight through much of the kenetic energy also passes stright through. Unless you have some specially made fragmentation ammo in .500 Magnum that you can get to stay in the body, you won't deliver as much energy as you otherwise could. On the otherhand, the forward momentum and force of the .500 is so much that it would blow right through tissue and bone that would stop a less powerful round. In this case, the .500 could do much more damage to certain areas as it passes through thr body. I guess it depends on where you hit the person.

Bad choice. I think you will be in trouble before the BG will be. 1 misplaced shot that goes thru several walls and kills an innocent will put your life in legal turmoil for ever. You don't have the influence of being an ENRON board member. There are many reasons LEO's do not carry such weapons. Save your money and get a compact auto of your choice. Become proficient and spent the rest on a big bore boom boom of your choice.

I don't think it would be a good idea. 460, yeah, 'cause you can load it with.45 colt. But not .500.
    However, i wonder if a scoped long-barreled .500 has any counter-sniper potential:rolleyes:

a 500 for sd is like driving an suv that can hold 5-9 people as your personal daily driver. its not very economical, necessary, or practical, but it'll sure work. plus, like the big shiney SUV, you can show off to your friends with it, if you like, and they will think you're cool.

John Ross resurrected a thread with his name in it! Cool.

I've never shot one of these beasts, but this month's Guns Magazine had a review of the 460 and 500 in EX (snubnose!!) trim. They seemed to like them, surprisingly enough.

Germane to the discussion, they fired off 5 shots in the each gun under test, to see how long it took to dump the ammo:
    M1911: .81 sec
    S&W 629 Mountain: 2.04 sec
    S&W ES X500 (500 special): 2.29
    S&W ES X500 (500 mag grizzly): 3.65 sec (4 shots only)
    S&W ES X460 (200 gr CorBon): 5.79

Those guns must not be easy to fire quickly. The shooter couldn't complete the 5 round string in the 500 because the gun got out of position and he almost dropped it (!!). Probably not great for SD, although you could carry reduced power loads (500sp or 45 colt in the 460) which would certainly also be adequate for SD.

They seemed to like both guns, and I sure would like to shoot one. I'd love one on my hip when I'm flyfishing in Grizzly country.

A .500 would definitely STOP an attacker, if you can draw it and shoot it accurately, but then a prosecutor, and the BGs family would destroy you.
