Wasnt sure whether to put this in revolvers or rifles as both may be chambered. Wondered about the expansion characteristics of this bullet. The XTP's have vast differences in the speeds they expand. Also I recall in 452 they have both a 300 XTP and 300gn XTP mag and the XTP MAG version needs at least another 400fps to expand

Anyhow back to the topic, does anyone have any reliable data, youtube vids or personal experiences of the 500cal 350XTP bullet and what impact speeds it expands at? Also does Hornady do a 350XTp and 350XTP MAG or are the one and the same bullet in.500cal?

I better add a few more provisos.
1. I know the bullet starts at 50cal and will still kill, but thats not the subject being discussed here.
2. The general "why does it matter' guy, who is always 2nd or third on a lot of threads these days. Dont bother posting thanks
3. Not interested in cast bullets
4. No other brands/projectiles/general life advice
5. I dont have a specific revolver or rifle in mind, question is about the bullet ad velocity, not the gun or what I am hunting.
6. Dont bother quoting Hornadies expansion envelope chart. Its totally gooned up, as any pistol or subsonic hunter will tell you.

Thanks in advance

My experience with the XTP is that they do not expand as well as the FTX-
Below is a pic of a blood trail from a large whitetail buck shot threw the heart at 75 yards with the 500 S&W with a stout 300 gr FTX load- ....pieces of heart in the snow-

Now- on really tough game you may want the XTP for penetration over the FTX.... I have not tried either on large tough game- someone else can chime in ..that has-IMG_20181117_163506290.jpg

I thought the difference in the XTP's, was for standard rounds, and then magnum or higher pressure?

Don't the MAG bullets, have a thicker jacket on them, for this reason?

I load 500 S&W for my brother he is a bear hunter the 500 was mine but he really wanted it for bear hunting so I sold it to him, plus I have a 454 Casull . I load for him the Hornady 350 grain XTP Mag bullet because of the heavier jacket as it withstands the power , speed and impact better than the Regular XTP. He really likes the XTP Mag bullets because they work well for him hunting bear and he tells me they expand well.

I use the 350 XTP Mags for my .50 Beowulf. Haven’t harvested an animal with it yet tho so not much help on terminal expansion but it makes one hell of a sound hitting a steel plate at 100 yds…

I don’t load for the 500, but standard XTPs in 357 Mag (159gr) and 44 Mag (240gr) rifles have ALWAYS worked in every deer I’ve ever shot. They are like a magic bullet. Not perfect by any means (low bc, not huge expansion) but they are extremely reliable at many velocities and tend to be 2-3 MOA from every lever gin I’ve tried them in.

To add, if you look closely at the XTP MAG you will see that the jacket is rolled into the HP cavity whereas the XTP has exposed lead.

That is the most significant difference between the two, and it makes a difference.
