Today at one of the local shops I saw a 4" 586 with a blue finish supposedly. The reason I say that is because it was dull, not just in spots, but completely and evenly over the entire surface of the gun. I asked the clerk if it was a 686 with some kind of black stainless but he checked and indeed it was stamped 586. Does any one know if this is something special from the factory or just the results of ther wrong cleaning agent.

Smith has offered, and still does from the PC, a matte blue finish. If and when my 586 goes back for a refurb, it will be in the matte finish.

I saw a similar one a little while back on consignment at a local store for $375. It was minty and I wanted to buy it, but another salesman mentioned it was sold already and should have been tagged as such. Don't know the history of that model, but it looked great.

Is it the newer 586's? S&W recently released the 586 line again, check the frame for a lock. From what I've seen, the finish is a matte blue, from far away almost looks black.

They just dont blue em' like they used to...

No lock on the frame so it must have been older. Some guy was selling his entire collection so it was among many choice pieces. However, the prices seemed a bit high to me. How does 450 a piece sound for 4" 586 and 686's that seemed to be in great condition? The one gun that looked a little more interesting was a Colt lawman for 395. I might have considered one of them but I had just found a steal on a 3" model 60 at the sister store to the one I was at.
