Well.. after being a long time lurker on here.. I thought it was time I should get more active on here, and get myself a good Home defense shotgun (I have to wait on the Handgun.. not 21 yet) So, after a lot of looking around I've decided on a 590A1 as my first shotgun.

My question is, what is a fair price for a 590A1 #51668 9-shot capacity, 20" cylinder bore barrel ghost ring sights, bayonet lug, and Speedfeed stock? does $450 sound to high?

And where can I get other 590A1's? they seem to be hard to come by, does anyone know of a store in the San Diego area that carries them?

Thanks in advance!!

Ryan

Sounds very high to me... I'd check a few dealers online to see what prices are available. I would think that $300-$350 would be more normal.

I just talked to a distributor and dealer price on that would be around $410 and retail is $600.

Impact Guns has a model on their site that retails for $100 less and they have it listed for $389.99.

You pay a premium for the 590A1 over the 590, but you do get the metal trigger housing, metal safety, heavier barrel and the model you are looking at has the speedfeed stock.

i dont think the A1 comes with the speed feed stock, mine did not.

i do not see a 51668 590-A1 on the mossberg web site, i think in your post the 8 is supposed to be a 3 which is the A1 model with all the neat stuff except it comes with a field stock not the speed feed.

Thanks for the fast replys!!

this place has the 6 shot for $380,

and this place has the 9 shot for $420

And that brings up another question... which is better? I will be using it for a Home defense and a general ranch gun. Which means all it will most likely be shooting is any large trouble some critter at close range, and maybe a few rabbits or marmots. Are the extra 3 shots worth the extra weight?

I have only shot the 9 shot one, and it seemed a little front heavy, but then again, I wouldn't want anymore recoil. And for a gun that’s only going to see occasional use, it probably wouldn't make that big a difference.

any advice on which to get?

thanks again!

i'd go with the short tube, myself. i like how it balances, and i tend to be of the opinion that if five shells don't solve your problem, three more ain't gonna help.

kd5rov,

I think that price is in the ballpark, at least where I am. I bought the 51660 (same 590A1 without the ghost rings or speedfeed). Since Mossberg categorizes it as one of their Law Enforcement models, which most dealers don't stock, I found only one local place with a distrbutor who could supply it. (My model was a little harder to come by than those with ghost rings.) Good thing he's the one who always has the best prices.

While in the process of looking for mine, the 51663 model was quoted for about $410-420 (MSRP $558). In that light I don't think $450 (MSRP $600) would be outrageous. It does depend, however, on your local market. Internet deals are good but FFL shipping fees need to be considered. I figure your model availability is similar to mine so you may be limited as to who can get it for you.

As for the 6 vs. 9 shots, personally, I tend to go with a bit more than I think I would normally need. That goes for everything. (I took 3 gallons of water on overnight 20-mile scout hikes, and the campground had a faucet. I wanted to make sure it would be a long time before I was dehydrated. You should see my car when packed for a trip. I am getting better though.) So I prefered the ability (I don't have to fill it) to have more ammo in the magazine and some stronger components. It turns out I got into some 3-gun competition and really use that extra capacity. The best advice is to give both a try and pick what works for you. It sounds like the 6-shot might shoot more comfortably for you.

Let us know what you decide.
