5mm Remington Magnum rimfire.

I was able to purchase a like-new 1973 Remington 5mm Magnum rifle from a guy a work with.
He bought it, put a box of ammo through it, cleaned it and put it away in the back of his closet in a beautiful flannel lined, vinyl case for forty four years...Took it out every few years and oiled it up and back in the closet it went.
Got it for a song and then the discovery was made... Ammo.
Anyone have some for sale?
I picked up seven boxes of Aquila but it's pricey.
Thanks for any help you can give a newbie...

I have seen the ludicrous prices people are asking for a box of Remington original ammo. Way off the scale of normality.
One guy on GunBroker was asking $80.00 for a box.
I would convert it over to the center fire before I'd start paying those prices. I paid $35 a box for seven boxes. And I thought that was a bit high.

Well I was going to ask for $100 a box. Actually it would be cheaper than what you already paid. It is not original Remington Ammo. If interested PM. Otherwise good luck with the rifle. It was ahead of it's time. The 17 HMR would be the only thing I could think of that would compare. There are still rifles out there for sale.

I think Remington ammo can be bought for somewhere between 50 and 60 a box... I think it's easily the best ammo of any ever offered.

Aguila is your only option. The original Remington ammo is scarce and collectible. Hence the prices you're seeing.

Aguila is discontinued according to Midway. Isn't listed in Aguila's site either. There's a box on Gunbroker at $49.95.
There's a guy with a box of Remington brand ammo he thinks is worth $250. No bids though.

I had one of these and bought it along with a case of ammo about 30 years back. Loved that little rifle for spring turkey season (legal down here) as well as knocking bushy-tails out of the trees. Sold the rifle about 10 years ago and about 10 years back sold the last of the ammo I had for $50/box. All original Remington stuff. A few years ago I stumbled on a half a box of the original stuff and sold it on GB for 20$ + shipping. The guy told me that they had a conversion available to make them into a centerfire round using small pistol primers and .20 caliber bullets.

I purchased my Remington 5mm magnum when they were new. Loved the gun, but then the so-and-so's quit making the ammo just a few years later. I'd bought quite a bit of ammo in the year or so after I bought the gun, so it was about ten years down the road when I went to get some more. The LGS then informed me of how Remington had bent me over the barrel of the gun. I then consigned the gun and a box of ammo with that store & made money when it sold. But I still harbor a grudge against Remington.

When I bought the gun I was in college, married, & on the G.I. Bill. Dirt poor in other words. I literally missed meals & worked till my hands bled to buy the thing, & then got treated like that. If Remington had properly marketed the gun & the round, the .17HMR would not exist today I think. But instead Hornady laughs all the way to the bank every month & Big Green turns that way with envy.

I thought everybody knew the 5mm was graveyard dead.

The cartridge was never really given a chance. It was a premium varmint round (not a cheap plinker like the .22LR), marketed by a single manufacturer and only in their budget model. Like so many others, it was a great cartridge and really did deserve to succeed.

When the .17 WSM came out I hoped it would not wither and die. It seems to be hanging in there. I picked up a Savage B-Mag last year when Walmart was closing the pencil barreled models out. Every time I go to Walmart or Academy I pick up a box of ammo for it. $15 for 50 rounds is about the same as .22 Mag and .17 WSM is easier to find and has been easier to find for a while. I pick up a box or two of .22 Mag every chance I get also.

Since things are returning to normal with the .22 LR situation I've cut back my purchases of it. I need to inventory my stash though. I want to have a solid 40k rounds on hand.

In spite of the ammo situation, the rifle is one very nice firearm and, as such, would make a nice wall hanger when I run through the 350 rounds I have.
At $100 I paid, it won't break me to hang it up. Might even leave the scope on it. Heck, the scope alone is probably worth more than the hundred bucks I paid.
Unless someone wants to pony up a good price for the rifle and that gold plated ammo.

These were budget priced rifles in the first place. It would be different if they were made like the 541. You'd end up spending more than the gun was worth just to get it shooting again. IMHO, this is a dead end money pit. Even if you get it cheap, I see no point in falling in love with a rifle you know for a fact you soon won't be able to feed. It's best avoided all the way around.
