Hi there from south africa , was recently given this 6.5x53R jeffreys which I put a scope on , question is is there a way of modifying the clip or magazine to allow for the rifle to be more than just a single shot .

You must have clips.
The early Mannlichers fed from an en-bloc clip that loaded from the top and fell out the bottom of the magazine when empty. This was good for the Dutch and Romanian armies, inconvenient for hunters.

I don't know if you can load clipped ammunition under a scope sight, though.

Can you post a photo? Those old rifles are fascinating.

Can you still get fresh ammo for it? I know this is a rimmed case, not the usual 6.5mm Mannlicher-Schonauer.

Hi there , thank's for the advice , it is a rimmed case based on the 303 british , I have 160, old kynoch ammo for it , 160grain round nose , travelling 2300ft/sec . Problem is they have berdan primers , but I,m doing my research now to try reloading them ( once used ).

Will post photos , all you gun lovers should like what you see , got the smoothest action I have ever used ( true german engeneering at its best)

note case .

Technically it's Steyr from Austria. The Rumanian and Dutch Mannlicher 1892 and 1895 model rifles respectively. It's Gew88 type (Schlegelmilch) bolt with a Mannlicher clip-loading magazine, and when it was later coupled with rimless ammo in the Schonauer spool magazine, eventually became the famous Mannlicher Schonauer rifle.

If you intend to find information about reloading for it, your best bet is to look for information about 6.5x53R Dutch, as most reloading dies are labelled for that cartridge. The clips are the same between all models. Here in the USA, as I recall, most people make ammo from .30-40 Krag or .303 British casings.

WDM Bell, the famous elephant hunter, loved the 6.5 for penetrative power, low recoil, low noise, and good accuracy.

Bell reportedly dropped the .256 after he got a batch of bad ammo that split brass.
He went to the .275 Rigby (7mm Mauser) and later the .318 Westley Richards.

This is the bolt side veiw , it is a very light rifle which is great for walk and stalk hunting . Our hunting season has just opened , and am hoping to use it .Unfortunately I am in a very long and tedious proses of obtaining a lisence. The friend that gave me the 6.5 x 53r also has the 6.5 x 54 which he used in out hunt last year , the caliber proved itself very effective on buck up to 200lbs .

6.5x54R

Beautiful rifle you have there. I had a Dutch model. I used 303 Brit cases and 6.5x54 dies. It shot extremely well. I passed it on as a collector piece. I would like another some what abused model to sporterize. Charles Sheldon used one by Jeffreys also in his book "The Wilderness of Denali" 1900-03 era. He hunted for a museum. He wrote several such books and always used this rifle. I think it had a cocking piece sight. He was an excellent marksman and the cartridge always seemed to perform well. Good luck with it!

I'm thinking of another solution to my ammo clip problem ,there is a possiblety that by mounting a long relief scope I might have enouph room behind the scope to get a loaded clip to load from the top , any thoughts ?? And what scopes would be best suited .By the way shot a 40 kg warthog with the 6,5 x 54 m/s

Sure, if you can mount a "Scout Scope" forward of the receiver the loading problem disappears. Would not look traditional but would allow the use of a scope and the magazine simultaneously. This might entail some fancy gunsmithing.

The hell it would not look traditional, the German Skopar D low-power scout scope was built specifically for Haenel New Model Mannlichers (Gew88 sporters), Dutch/Romanian Mannlichers, and the like. It's rare in the Americas, but I've seen several similar setups on ca. 1910 rifles in European collections.

Unfortunatly beautiful as it is , it was altered before I got it , by someone putting a cheek piece on the stock , that being the case, to me actually using the rifle for hunting here in africa is important , and as I'm no spring chicken , and the eyes are not what they were , a little help is needed , so a light low power scope should help .

for the rifle enthusiast

I've mounted an old vx1 4x scope , to keep it's balance , took it to the shooting range and got 1inch groups at 100mts with kynoch ammo that is well over 50 years old , velocities were 2337fps with a standerd deviation of 4 fps not bad for old factory ammo , does anyone what know where to get sling rings for this rifle.

pic's of rifle after mounting scope

We needed to alter bolt handle , scope is vx1 4x , it feels well balanced . on the range it was great got a 1 in grouping at 100mts with old kynoch ammo with velocities of 2337fps with a standard deviation of 4 fps . bullets are 160grn round nose .
