Which weight bullets "generally" gives better accuracy for you from a 22" commercial barrel with a 1:10 twist, 131 grn bullet or 139/140 grain?

Okay thanks. This will likely be relegated to varmint duty so a lighter bullet may be called for. I have a couple of boxes of S&B 131 grains(I don't hand load...yet)arriving today so that will be my starting point. I have some 139s as well....won't hurt to try them just to see.

You're correct, it won't hurt to give them a try. The worst that can happen is they don't stabilize. Are the bullets on the shorter or longer side? In reality it's the bullet length that's more critical than the weight.

With a 1:10 your best bet is 120gr bullet like the ballistic tip, 129-130gr projectiles would be pushing it but I would still give them a try. Best accuracy with my Swede was 45.5gr RL19 and a 129gr SST using neck sized Prvi brass. Shoots one semi smooth hole groups in my Tikka at 100 yards.

Oh, they're long all right.:D My Swede has a 1:8.5" twist which is just about right for the 139-142gr bullets. 1:9" MAY stabilize them, but cannot see it happening with 1:10". But, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Yeah, I know most 6.5mm bullets are long. I was kinda talking in general terms! lol

Range report.

Tried out the Swede this morning with both 131 grn Sellier and Bellot(6,5x55SE no.2923) and 140 grn Remington PSP (R65SWEI) ammo. It performed very well with the lighter bullet(as you can tell from the targets) considering that the target is just a blur to me looking over my glasses. All in all I am very happy with it. It is sitting in a Bell and Carlson synthetic stock with a Boyd trigger set at 2lbs and topped with a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40 scope with Butler Creek flip up covers.

1/10" twist? Indeed. My Remington Mod-7 in .260 has a 1/10" twist. (What was Remington thinking ???)
It too shoots 140 and 160gr FLAT BASED bullets well. Under 1" at 100yds but it does have a bit of verticle string to them.
129gr "boat-tail" and/or plastic tip bullets don't shoot well, and 140gr Hornady SST's shoot shot-gun patterns at 100yds.
If you want decent 140gr bullets, try the Speer and Hornady 140gr flat-based bullets. Also, the Prvi-Partisan 139gr Semi-pointed boat-tails shoot "ok" (1.5moa).

I did not measure group size but the red bull POA is 1" in diameter. On the 131 grn S&B target the 2 fliers were when I pulled and I knew it when it happened. I'm convinced that,if my vision problems weren't a factor, this rifle would/could/should be a 5 shot one holer(even using factory loaded ammo as here). Perhaps I'll get someone who doesn't have my optical malady to test that theory. Perhaps with match ammo or handloads.........
