629 5” Cleaned Up! U SO HOTT!

Lookin' good Billy Rae...it's a hellofa stopping handgun for back country use....Chest carry will lighten the load considerably, and still allow you access when you need it in a hurry...but then you already knew that....My 5" 629, is mostly a range gun now that I'm in my geezer-hood and I need it like another hole the head, but it still gets some exercise in our side meadow,,,,and also when covered up inside my walking the dog barn coat in the holster I've posted before (OWB Tom Threepersons)....if only to relive those days when I had the legs & lungs for treks in the high country.
Best regards, and congrats on what appears to be a fine example....look fwd to some posted range tests. Rod...awe, hell...here's the pic again...

Looks so good! love those grips, set off a nice color tone. I believe I have a chest rig coming in with a Colt Trooper soon.

I had the 5” and 6.5” power port versions of the 629 Classic. Years ago I sold the 5” and kept the 6.5”, but looking back I should’ve kept the 5” and sold the other one.

Stay safe.
Honestly, I can’t tell the difference between the 6” & 5”. Except the full lug on the 5”.

The 6.5” Classic power port has the full lug, and a factory port between the muzzle and the Patridge front sight blade. :D

The S&W N frames I have in the safes; Models 629 MG, 624, 57 and 629 Classic PP. (Now minus the 6.5” 624. I sent that one away and used the $$ as partial payment for a Les Baer .45).

Love it!

I don’t think one can go too terribly wrong with either Inspector Callahan, his trademark Model 29, .the 44 Magnum round (or .44 Special, for that matter), or a five-inch barreled N-frame at all.

Not a 29 and not a .44 here, but a five-inch 27 for supporting documentation haha…

Good lookin' pistola, there, Jumbo. At a quick glance, I'd say I like the darker look of your Altamont 'Ropers' over the more blond type I've got. But I'll add, and I think you may agree, if you've spent some range time with it loaded up to full speed....it ain't no fun after the first cylinder full....My 2nd knuckle is a bloodied mess by then. Best regards, Rod

Yep, same here with the Ropers. Different pain, but same result with some Ahrends Tacical combats: after three cylinders, I've got a knot at the root of my thumb that doesn't want to go away. Can't even grasp the gun firmly yet a week later. I'd like, I think, some "Roper-ish" grips that bring the filler behind the trigger guard down further ala the Ahrends. Kinda like Jordan Troopers without all the extra meat over the backstrap. With that extra meat, I can't reach the trigger correctly. Starting to think an N-frame just isn't for me. Don't have these issues with a Bisley.

I think these are Ahrends grips on my 29-2 4”

Such great picture quality!

They definitely are Ahrends. All the versions I've been able to find since they went under are Combats with FG's. I'd like to try some smooth one's if I can find 'em.
Again....yep....I've got one set of the finger grooved models in birds eye maple that I like a lot, but would really like them more without the finger grooves. Alas, he's gone from the business...a sad state of affairs. Those are beauties Mark. Regards, Rod

I had a S&W, 5” 629-4 back in the mid 90s. Like an idiot, I sold it to buy something, I thought I needed more. Of all the revolvers, that have gotten away from me, I regret selling the 5” 529-4 the most. About 10 years ago, I bought a new 629-something, with the lock. It was no where close to the 629-4. It didn’t have the grip serrations, the fit and finish was no where the same, it had a totally different feel and it had the lock. I tried to make myself like it, but just couldn’t. I let it go and don’t miss it, the least bit. The only regret I have about it, is buying it. At some point, I plan to find and get another 5” 629 from that era. I have a 4” 629-4. I like it fine and will not be letting it go, but that 5”, full lug, 629, is in my opinion, the best 629 ever made. The barrel length is prefect, the weight, the full lug adds, up front and the way they handle, carry and shoot, make them ideal. They don’t carry like a 4”, but are far from carrying a 6”. If I were you, I would glue it to my hand. You have an excellent revolver.

AMAZING! 🤩 thanks for the encouragement. I’m glade I bought it… $850 was steep but I’m happy

@Mark_Mark, beautiful 5-er you got there! I love my 4” 629-6 but the 5 inch, full lug barrel is just all kinds of special sauce. Yours looks great but if you need to touch it up at all, I and others have found that a gray Scotch Brite pad is a perfect match for the S&W “brushed” finish. Light, unidirectional strokes do wonders for little scratches and such (in case you didn’t know this already).

I need to look up that technique because it does have a lot of field scratches on it. But those rubber grips will have to stay. They feel so good.

Love my 6” 629 (the guy on top) and decided this weekend on a whim that he needed a 6-1/2” friend in 10mm, so picked up a 610-3. I was thinking about a Ruger LC Carbine in 10mm, but the wheelgun won my heart (as they always do). I have a lot of 10mm brass, a bunch of VV-N340 (which is my new powder of choice while I am trying to conserve my cache of Unique), and plan to see how far I can push the Holy Centimeter.
